PREP SOFTBALL Spartans clinch tie for SVC crown



Ursuline defeated Fitch to remain in contention for a share of the title.
WARREN -- Boardman High clinched a tie for the Steel Valley Conference softball championship, defeating Warren Harding 10-1 Thursday.
Boardman (18-1, 6-0 SVC) has won five straight conference titles.
Jennifer Pancake singled three times, Jennifer Feret collected two hits including a homer, Meagan Cunningham had a single and a double and Krysta Sylvester added two base hits for the Spartans. Four other Spartans had two RBIs apiece.
Stacy Wilden doubled for Harding (10-7, 2-6).
Ursuline 3, Fitch 2
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline freshman Vanessa Dickson drove home the winning run in the 10th inning.
With the extra-inning state rule in effect, Ursuline's Ali Vitello started off the bottom of the 10th on second base. Courtney Davidson, who had four hits, reached first on an infield single and moved Vitello to third. Dickson then hit a solid single to drive home Vitello.
Fitch had taken a 2-0 lead in the fourth. With one out in the fifth, Davidson singled and Dickson hit a home run to tie it a 2-all.
Maureen Cearfoss (12-10) worked a complete game, with eight strikeouts to pick up the win. She also hit three singles for the Irish (14-10, 6-2 SVC).
Sophomore Jennifer Purnell of Fitch (9-9, 0-6) also pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.
Poland 7, Salem 0
POLAND -- The Bulldogs led just 1-0 after five innings but collected seven of their nine hits in the sixth, scoring six times.
Poland (17-4, 8-1) captured a share of the Metro Athletic Conference championship.
Katie Naumoff doubled twice and Jessie Modic had one to lead the Bulldogs.
Salem (0-17, 0-9) was held to one hit by three Poland pitchers.
Poland coach Reid Lamport, who began coaching the Bulldogs in 1990, has 301 career wins in 14 seasons.
Canfield 6, East Palestine 2
EAST PALESTINE -- In her first varsity at-bat, Jenn DiGiantonio hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to put Canfield (17-5) ahead.
Winning pitcher Lindsay Yosay (5-2) tossed a four-hitter.
Jenny Yokley and Jennessa Greenawalt had RBI singles for East Palestine (9-12).
Niles 10, Campbell 2
CAMPBELL -- Shannon Floyd hit a grand slam in the seventh inning and Stacia Ray added a double for the Red Dragons (7-11).
Jackson-Milton 4, Mathews 3
NORTH JACKSON -- With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Niki James singled in Audrey Robinson with the winning run to cap a three-run rally for the Bluejays (14-5, 8-4 Inter County League).
The Mustangs (7-12, 5-8), who were held to two hits by Corey Velk (14-5), scored three times in the fifth and led 3-1 entering the seventh.
Lyndsey Johns and Erica Wilmoth reached on errors and Robinson walked to load the bases. In between two strikeouts, Jayne Fenton singled in two runs to tie the score and put Robinson on third.
South Range 12, McDonald 1
NORTH LIMA -- South Range (10-7, 7-5 ICL) jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
Amy Algeo hit a triple and two doubles, driving in three runs. Winning pitcher Skye Walley (10-6) worked a complete game, with five strikeouts. She also hit two doubles and scored four times. Jessica Stickler hit two singles and drove in two runs.
Cindy Green hit a double and single for McDonald (0-11, 0-9).
