NEW ORLEANS -- Rookie Akio Sadakata shot a 29 on the front nine and finished with a career-best 64 Thursday to share the first-round lead at the HP Classic of New Orleans.
Paul Stankowski, who had five birdies on the back nine, also shot a 64.
Eight golfers, including leading money winner Davis Love III and defending champion K.J. Choi, were one shot back on the 7,078-yard English Turn course.
Sadakata, who turned 24 last week, has made the cut three times in nine tournaments and his best finish was 53rd in the BellSouth Classic at Sugarloaf.
Choi took a double-bogey on 18 when his 4-foot putt to tie for the lead lipped out.
Love, a three-time winner this season, also slipped up on his final hole, taking a bogey on the 370-yard 9th.

BRESCIA, Italy -- Australia's Peter O'Malley shot an 8-under 64 and held a two-shot lead over England's Gary Clarke after one round of the Italian Open.
O'Malley, who defeated Tiger Woods in the first round of the 2002 Match Play Championship, equaled the course record set by Bernhard Langer when the German won this tournament in 1997.
Colin Montgomerie, playing in Europe for the first time this season after a mediocre string of events in the United States, was six strokes back.
