ADVANCED TRAINING
Army Signal Corps
Army Pvt. Ashley Hromyak, a 2002 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, is assigned to the Army Signal Corps at Fort Shaftner, Hawaii, after graduating from airborne training at Fort Benning, Ga. Hromyak is the daughter of Ken and Debi Hromyak of Youngstown.
Submarine Course
Navy Seaman Bart Jordan, son of Teresa and Melvin Jordan of Lisbon, graduated from the six-week Basic Enlisted Submarine Course at the Naval Submarine School, Groton, Conn. Jordan is a 2002 graduate of Beaver Local High School, Lisbon.
HONORS
Achievement Medal
Marine Corps Cpl. Michelle L. Griggs, daughter of Violet F. Griggs of New Philadelphia, and Lawrence Griggs of Jefferson, received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal while assigned to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One, Yuma, Ariz., while serving as administrative clerk. Griggs is a 1999 graduate of Geneva High School, Geneva, Ohio.
910TH AIRLIFT WING
Recently assigned
Several area residents have been assigned to the 910th Airlift Wing at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna. They include: Reserve Senior Airman Thomas L. Kirst (Greenville Area High School, '84), a cargo specialist, the son of Raymond P. and Marcia L. Kirst of Greenville, Pa.; Reserve Airman 1st Class Gregory P. Crissman, the son of Paul D. and Edna L. Crissman of Newton Falls; Reserve Airman 1st Class Brian E. Cales, the son of George E. and Donna J. Cales of Mercer, Pa.; Reserve Airman 1st Class Randy P. Groves Sr. (Chalker High School, Southington, '85), a fuels apprentice, the son of Ernest P. Groves of West Farmington and Billie D. Taylor of Champion and husband of Paula, daughter of Paul Kerr of Struthers and Gloria Pecchia of Youngstown.

Operation Iraqi Freedom
Several area residents have been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. They include:
UMarine Corps Cpl. Joshua A. Balko, son of Cathy and Jack Balko of Girard, assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.
UNavy Petty Officer 3rd Class Marco A. Garza, whose wife, Brooke, is the daughter of Jaqueline and Jefferey Mercer of East Liverpool. He is in the Arabian Gulf assigned to the guided missile frigate USS Thach, homeported in San Diego, Calif.
UNavy Master Chief Petty Officer Gregory D. Davis, son of Angeline L. Davis of Winnfield, La., and Roger J. Davis Sr. of Brookfield, assigned to Fighter Squadron 22, based at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, Va. The squadron is onboard the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, homeported in Norfolk, Va. Davis is a 1980 graduate of New Brighton (Pa.) High School.
UArmy Reserve Staff Sgt. Josiah Wheeler, married to the former Nicole Leonard of Youngstown, has been deployed to Kuwait with the 217th Transportation Co. out of Fort Sam Houston, Texas. His mother-in-law is Joan Leonard of Youngstown.
UNavy Senior Chief Petty Officer Daniel L. Reece, whose wife, Robin, is the daughter of Judy and George Stanley of Newton Falls, is participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom while assigned to Carrier Air Wing Three on board the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman. Reece's unit is the command element tasked to coordinate offensive and defensive air operations for aircraft squadrons.
Enduring Freedom
Area residents deployed to an overseas forward operating location to support the mission of Operation Enduring Freedom, military policemen previously assigned to the 363rd Military Police Company at Fort Lee, Va., include:
UArmy Reserve Pfc. Jonathan E. Yerkey (Beaver Local School, '01), the son of Penelope Clark of East Liverpool; Army Reserve Spec. Joshua M. Brown (Wellsville High School, '01), son of William H. Brown and Paula S. DeLauder, both of Wellsville, and husband of Ashley, who is the daughter of William E. and Margrette Cronin of East Liverpool; Army Reserve Spec. Melanie D. Pickens (Southern Local High School, Salineville, '99), daughter of David G. Pickens of Wellsville and Kathy A. Pickens of Lisbon; Army Reserve Sgt. Charles K. Ruby, son of Charles L. and Dorothy J. Ruby of Youngstown and husband of Pamela, daughter of Richard and Margaret Magill of Girard.
