DETROIT -- Jay Gibbons broke up Mike Maroth's no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the eighth and Baltimore went on to score six runs with two outs in the second game. Gibbons hit a go-ahead two-run single and Tony Batista drove in another run in the eighth as Baltimore rallied to win the opener. Baltimore has won four straight and 13 of 19 after starting 2-6. Tony Batista followed Gibbons' hit with a single to put runners on first and second. Maroth (0-7) retired the next two batters before Baltimore rallied for six runs. In the first game, B.J. Ryan (3-0) earned a win without throwing a pitch. Ryan earned the win when he picked off Omar Infante on first base after he relived Pat Hentgen with two outs in the seventh.
Twins 6, Devil Rays 5, 13 innings
MINNEAPOLIS -- Cristian Guzman's out-out double in the 13th inning scored Jacque Jones. Guzman sent a 3-2 offering from Travis Harper (0-2) into left-center for the winning hit. Jones reached second on a bizarre ground-rule double. Left fielder Carl Crawford and center fielder Rocco Baldelli converged on what appeared to be an easy pop fly. But both slowed down and the ball dropped between them and bounced over the center field wall to set up Guzman's hit.
Yankees 2, Mariners 1
NEW YORK -- Mike Mussina matched a career high with his eighth straight win, backed by home runs from Alfonso Soriano and Jorge Posada, and New York won for the 11th time in 14 games. Mussina (6-0) became the first Yankees pitcher to win his first six starts since Bob Turley won seven straight in 1958 in his Cy Young Award season. Mussina leads the majors in victories and his nine strikeouts boosted his AL-leading total to 51. He gave up six hits, walked none and lowered his ERA to 1.60.
Red Sox 6, Royals 5
BOSTON -- Todd Walker's RBI double off Jason Grimsley (1-2) in the eighth inning sent Boston to a three-game sweep. The Royals have dropped four straight and five of six after getting off to a franchise-best 17-4 start. Mike Sweeney, Carlos Beltran and Raul Ibanez homered for Kansas City. Trot Nixon homered for the Red Sox, who won their fourth consecutive game and second in a row in their last at-bat.
Blue Jays 7, Rangers 6
TORONTO -- Roy Halladay won his first game of the season and Toronto overcame four Texas homers, including Rafael Palmeiro's 498th. Juan Gonzalez hit two homers, giving him a major league-leading 11, and Carl Everett hit his 10th for the Rangers, who nearly rallied from five runs down to win it. Former Ranger Frank Catalanotto homered off Colby Lewis (3-2) as a part of a six-run second inning for the Blue Jays, who avoided a three-game sweep. Toronto ended a 10-game losing streak to Texas.
White Sox 7, Athletics 5
CHICAGO -- Magglio Ordonez went 3-for-5 with a home run, and Miguel Olivo also hit a solo homer as Chicago avoided a sweep. Paul Konerko had a pair of RBIs, and Frank Thomas, Carlos Lee and Tony Graffanino also drove in runs for Chicago, which won for just the fourth time in the last 11 games. AL MVP Miguel Tejada, dropped to fifth in the batting order because of his slow start, homered for the first time in more than a week. Eric Chavez also went deep, but it wasn't enough as the A's had their season-high six-game winning streak end.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Cubs 5, Giants 1, 10 innings
SAN FRANCISCO -- Alex Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning for his second home run of the game, and Sammy Sosa followed with another shot. After an error by third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo put two runners on with two outs in the 10th, Gonzalez connected off Tim Worrell (1-1) for his second homer of the year. Sosa's 505th career homer made it 5-1. Gonzalez's first homer tied it at 1 leading off the sixth and snapped a 17-inning scoreless streak by Giants starter Damian Moss. Both benches cleared in the third after Cubs starter Mark Prior plunked slugger Barry Bonds in the upper right leg on a 1-1 curveball. Bonds, hit twice on breaking pitches by Kerry Wood on Tuesday, began walking to the mound and Prior motioned him on as they exchanged words. No punches were thrown.
Cardinals 6, Mets 5, 10 innings
ST. LOUIS -- Jim Edmonds homered off Scott Strickland (0-2) with one out in the 10th inning as St. Louis completed a three-game sweep. Rey Sanchez had four hits for the Mets, who rallied from a 5-1 deficit with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth. The big blow was Joe McEwing's two-run double off the top of the left-field wall against Steve Kline. Pinch-hitter Roberto Alomar tied it with a sacrifice fly.
Expos 5, Brewers 0
MILWAUKEE -- Zach Day threw a three-hitter for his first career shutout as Montreal finished a three-game sweep. The only hits off Day (3-1) were infield singles by pitcher Wayne Franklin (1-3) in the third and Royce Clayton in the eighth, and a single to left by Keith Ginter in the ninth. Day faced 31 batters, only four above the minimum, in his eighth career start. Montreal leads the majors with six shutouts this season. Michael Barrett and Brad Wilkerson each hit solo home runs for the Expos, who have won six of seven and are eight games over .500 for the first time since they were 25-17 on May 23, 2000.
Reds 7, Rockies 2
DENVER -- Jeff Austin (1-1) took a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning in his second career start, and Aaron Boone and Jose Guillen each hit two-run homers for Cincinnati. The Reds won for the sixth time in eight games and posted their third straight series victory.
Braves 8, Astros 7
HOUSTON -- Pinch-hitter Mark DeRosa came through with a tie-breaking two-run homer off Billy Wagner (1-2) in the ninth inning, and Atlanta completed a three-game sweep. Andruw Jones also hit a two-run homer for the Braves, who have won five in a row, seven straight on the road and 14 of 16 overall following a 4-8 start. Lance Berkman, breaking out of a season-long slump, tied a career high with six RBIs for Houston
Marlins 4, Diamondbacks 3
PHOENIX -- Brian Banks hit his first homer of the season off Oscar Villareal (1-2) leading off the eighth inning. Armando Almanza (3-0) pitched 11/3 perfect innings for the win, and Braden Looper worked a hitless ninth for his fifth save in six chances.
Phillies 4, Dodgers 1
LOS ANGELES -- Bobby Abreu and Mike Lieberthal homered to back a solid outing by Brandon Duckworth. Duckworth (2-1) was charged with an unearned run and seven hits in five-plus innings, striking out seven and walking none. Former Dodger Terry Adams relieved Duckworth with the bases loaded in the sixth. Turk Wendell escaped a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the eighth without any damage.
