Penguins leadin golf honors
INDIANAPOLIS -- In the first year of the Horizon League women's golf competition, Youngstown State led the way on the first all-league team announced by the conference.
Seniors Lori Hatcher and Jennifer Grossi, and sophomore Gina Abruzzino received honors on the all-league team.
The Penguins won the first Horizon League women's golf championship on Tuesday beating runner-up Loyola by 10 strokes.
The Penguins led the way with three players lauded, while Butler had two and Loyola and Cleveland State one.
Loyola's Kendra Palmer was the player of the year and Loyola freshman Marissa Capriola was the league's newcomer of the year. Cleveland State's Tom Porten was named coach of the year.
Malmisur to getprestigious award
YOUNGSTOWN -- Joe Malmisur, the former Youngstown State athletic director, will be presented the Heritage Award, which is the most prestigious honor bestowed upon a former faculty or administrative member.
Malmisur will receive the award Friday at the 22nd annual YSU awards dinner at Kilcawley Center. He will be honored along with Dr. Janet E. DelBene, chemistry professor emeritus.
Malmisur served as YSU athletic director from 1982-94. A native of Youngstown and graduate of East High, he helped lead the department during one of their most successful times in school history.
YSU won Division I-AA national championships in football in 1991, 1993 and 1994 and played for the title in 1992. He also took the Olympic sports programs from independent status by joining the Mid-Continent Conference in 1992.

Yazbek homersfor Hiram
HIRAM -- Dom Yazbek, a graduate of Chaney High School, hit his 18th career home run to become the Hiram College baseball team's all-time leader as the Terriers beat Grove City 15-5 Wednesday.
Hiram (20-16) has won five in a row.
Yazbek hit a three-run shot, his eighth of the year, in the seventh inning.
Best namedat Winthrop
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Mindy Best, a native of Columbiana and a 2001 graduate of Ohio Northern University, has been named an assistant athletic trainer at Winthrop University.
Best attends Tennessee Tech where she is working on her master's degree while serving as a graduate assistant trainer since July 2001. She expects to receive her master's degree this month.
While at Ohio Northern, Best was a student athletic trainer for four years, and a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa honorary academic fraternity.
Westminster has 4on PAC softball team
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College placed four players on the Presidents' Athletic Conference All-Conference softball team.
Senior shortstop Laura Raible (Pine-Richland) was named to the first team, and senior pitcher Darcy Sutton (Fox Chapel), junior third baseman/catcher Julie Zappa (Shaler) and sophomore first baseman Heidi Kimmel (Poland) were named to the second team.
Kimmel batted .342 (40-of-117) with four triples, 14 runs and 17 runs batted in.
Westminster is 15-20-1 overall and 5-5 in the PAC.
Fairhavenrace set
NILES -- The Fairhaven 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run will be Saturday at the Fairhaven School, located at 420 Lincoln Way, across from the main entrance to Eastwood Mall.
Registration will start at 9 a.m. The fee to register is $12.

Nash finalist for Calder Trophy
COLUMBUS -- Columbus Blue Jackets left wing Rick Nash was selected Wednesday as one of three finalists for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL's top rookie.
The other finalists are Barret Jackman of St. Louis and Henrik Zetterberg of Detroit.
