MAC SOFTBALL Ferenac's hit nets 1-0 win for Howland
The Tigers thumped Canfield out of first place while Poland took the lead.
HOWLAND -- Kristina Ferenac hit a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Amy Cornicelli Wednesday as the Howland High softball team defeated Canfield, 1-0, in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
The Tigers (12-4, 6-2 MAC) knocked the Cardinals (16-5, 7-2) out of first place in the loop, and created the possibility of a three-way tie.
Poland (16-4, 7-1) moved into first place while Howland is a game behind.
If Canfield defeats Poland Wednesday, then Howland, Poland and Canfield could share the title with 8-2 marks.
But if the Bulldogs avenge their league loss to Canfield, they would win their 17th straight league crown.
Winning pitcher Barbie Lewis scattered six hits and survived four errors by her defense to pitch Howland's shutout.
Canfield committed one error and stranded 10 baserunners. Megan Turocy (12-3) tossed eight shutout innings before giving up only her fifth earned run in 105.1 innings (0.33 earned-run average).
Poland 6, Struthers 0
POLAND -- Jessie Lamport (9-2) yielded just two singles and no walks with 13 strikeouts for the Bulldogs (16-4, 7-1).
Katie Naumoff had two hits including a triple. Britt Davis had a double while Lamport, Stephanie Russell and Laura Mauer each had two hits.
Struthers is 4-13, 2-8.
