CITY SERIES BASEBALL Chaney rules again on Balog's 1-hitter
The Cowboys won their 14th-straight consecutive City Series championship.
YOUNGSTOWN -- When the Chaney High School baseball team blanked Wilson, 16-0, in five innings Wednesday, the Cowboys seized their 14th straight City Series championship.
Dan Balog (1-0) threw a one-hitter for Chaney (16-3, 4-0), which scored 13 times in the third inning.
Balog had a single, a triple and three RBIs in the big inning.
Chris Hlinka led Chaney with three hits, one a homer, and two RBIs, while Sam Shaffo tacked on three hits.
Poland 12, Struthers 4
STRUTHERS -- Cole Budinsky (3-1) threw a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts for first-place Poland, in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Brandon Hardin led the Bulldogs with four hits and three RBIs, while Shawn Clayton added three hits including a double.
Poland led just 4-3 after three innings but scored five times in the fifth.
Mike Dubos had two hits, one a double, for the Wildcats.
Niles 4, Salem 0
NILES -- Jeff Claar pitched a complete-game three-hitter with eight strikeouts, as Niles won the Metro Athletic Conference game.
The Red Dragons (10-9, 3-6) scored three runs in the second inning to help their cause. Joe Skocik and Mike Ruscetti both had two hits for Niles, including a triple by Skocik, who scored twice. Ruscetti knocked in two runs.
Landon Heath, Shawn Spaulding and Brian Schwartz all had a hit for Salem (8-12, 2-7). Spaulding (1-4) gave up six hits over five innings before Jarin Heath's inning of relief.
Boardman 9, Ursuline 1
STRUTHERS -- Tom Zetts homered, Nate Tarsik had a triple while Andy Good and Dan Ford doubled for the Spartans (11-8, 5-0 Steel Valley Conference).
Good had three of the 13 Boardman hits. Brett Neely doubled and John Metzinger had three hits for the Irish (5-11, 2-5).
Springfield 7, Lowellville 4
STRUTHERS -- Tim Kawecki homered, Aaron Wood had a triple and single and Anthony Sobonsky doubled for the Tigers (6-10, 6-6 Inter-County League).
Ben Bond singled twice for the Rockets (5-11, 3-10).
W. Reserve 11, Mineral Ridge 0
BERLIN CENTER -- Brandon Keck (4-2) threw a one-hitter and struck out seven in the five-inning ICL game.
Every player in the lineup scored in the 11-run fourth inning for the Blue Devils (12-7, 9-4).
Luke Srock had three hits including a double with three RBIs.
Beaver Local 6, West Branch 1
LISBON -- Robert Shannon tossed a three-hitter while Stephen Mercer drove in two runs with a single and double for Beaver Local.
Beaver Local (13-6) also got two hits from Shannon.
