Vancouver leads in 2010 bid
Vancouver leadsin 2010 bid
LONDON -- Vancouver emerged as the favorite to land the 2010 Winter Olympics, and that could hurt New York's chances for the Summer Games two years later.
The city in western Canada got a boost Friday, receiving the best overall review in an International Olympic Committee report on the three 2010 bids, two months before the site is chosen.
New York already faces strong competition in its effort to win the 2012 Olympics, and its odds could be harmed further if Vancouver beats Pyeongchang, South Korea, and Salzburg, Austria, for the preceding games. The thinking is that the IOC probably would not award two consecutive Olympics to North America.
The 2010 bids were not graded or ranked, and the report only confirmed that all three cities would host "very good" Olympics.
But Vancouver came out with the most positive and fewest negative comments, ahead of Salzburg. Pyeongchang appeared to have come in third, described as having "very good potential."
The IOC will make a final choice July 2 in Prague, Czech Republic. With no overwhelming favorite, the result will be decided largely by political, geographical and other intangibles.
With the 2004 Olympics (Athens, Greece) and 2006 Olympics (Turin, Italy) in Europe, and the 2008 Olympics (Beijing) in Asia, Vancouver would appear to have the edge, since the IOC tends to spread its games around the globe.
