CHAMPION -- Two Trumbull County Joint Vocational students were taken to a Youngstown hospital after an accident involving four vehicles, all driven by students leaving the school.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the accident happened about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday on Educational Highway. One vehicle stopped, and a second vehicle following it swerved left of center to avoid a collision. It still struck the first car and two oncoming vehicles before stopping in a ditch, the patrol said.
The driver of the second vehicle, Alexis Steele, 18, and her passenger, Catherine Mosko, 17, were treated for minor injuries.
The highway patrol cited Steele for traveling left of center and not wearing a seat belt. Mosko was cited for not wearing a seat belt, as were the drivers and passengers of the third and fourth vehicles.
Money taken from home
SALEM -- Someone entered a home in the 600 block of East Third Street, broke into a locked room and took $150 from it, police said. No forced entry into the house itself was noted.
The crime occurred between 2:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
Leetonia football
LEETONIA -- School board members are considering provisions for the high school football team when it begins practicing late this summer.
The district is completing a new football field near the new school on Walnut Street.
Plans called for the new field to be ready by the upcoming season, but not for preseason practices, school Treasurer Larry Syverson explained today.
The school board, which met Wednesday, discussed whether to rent a modular locker room to place at the old field, which is also on Walnut Street about half a mile from the new school. The unit would give players a place to change clothes.
The other option would be to have the players change at the new school and walk to the practice field, Syverson said.
Charged in police chase
BEAVER, Pa. -- State police have filed charges against an East Palestine, Ohio, man accused of leading them on a high-speed chase on Pa. Route 51 near the Ohio state line and into East Palestine on Ohio Route 14.
State police at the Beaver Station have charged Paul George Geiger IV, 20, of Columbia Street with recklessly endangering another person, fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless driving, driving under suspension, speeding, careless driving, and driving at an unsafe speed.
Police said they pursued Geiger for about 10 minutes last Thursday on Pa. Route 51 between Taggart Road and the Ohio state line.
Geiger passed vehicles on the berm and reached speeds in excess of 110 miles per hour, police said.
Police didn't release information on the matter until this morning.
Mercer traffic alert
MERCER, Pa. -- Traffic on Pa. Route 58 near the Mercer County Career Center will be closed down for a short time around 9:30 a.m. Friday.
Traffic will be disrupted, but maintained, at other times until about noon.
Officials said the disruption will be caused when students are moved from the school as part of an emergency preparedness drill.
Independent-living complex
FARRELL, Pa. -- The Mercer County Community Action Agency broke ground Wednesday morning in the 600 block of Spearman Avenue for a $762,700 complex of 10 independent-living apartments for people with chronic mental illness.
The apartments will be divided between two buildings, and the complex will open for occupancy later this year, said Gary Cervone, vice president and chief financial officer at the Mercer County Community Action Agency.
The agency's partners in the project are the city of Farrell and Community Counseling Services of Hermitage. The project, known as Independence Park, is being financed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and First National Bank.
Church women plan event
WARREN -- Warren Area Church Women United will celebrate May Friendship Day on Friday in Friendship Baptist Church, Brier Street Southeast. The program leader is Mary Lees Locket, and the topic will be "Many Gifts, One Spirit."
Registration will be at 10:15 a.m., with donations at 10:45. The program starts at 11. Lunch will be served at noon for $4 per person.
