AROUND THE HORN Tuesday's other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Mariners 6, Yankees 0
NEW YORK -- Roger Clemens failed to get his 298th win, and Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui didn't do very much either in their first match-up in the major leagues. Clemens (4-1) allowed three homers for the first time since August, and the two Japanese players failed to drive in any runs. Bret Boone, Ben Davis and Edgar Martinez homered for Seattle, which has won 12 of its last 13 regular season games at Yankee Stadium. New York lost consecutive games for the first time this season. Suzuki, who in 2001 became the first Japanese non-pitcher to earn a regular job in the major leagues, was 1-for-5 with a bunt single and scored in the seventh inning. Matsui, who joined the Yankees this season, was 1-for-4. Gil Meche (3-1) took a three-hitter into the eighth.
Red Sox 7, Royals 2
BOSTON -- Nomar Garciaparra was 3-for-4 and Tim Wakefield pitched six innings as Boston rallied from a two-run deficit. The Royals have lost two straight to match their longest losing streak of the season. Wakefield (3-1) allowed two runs on seven hits, including an inside-the-park homer by Carlos Beltran and a conventional one by Mike DiFelice.
Orioles 11, Tigers 3
DETROIT -- Jason Johnson pitched five scoreless innings and Jerry Hairston had three runs and two RBIs to lead Baltimore. Detroit dropped to 3-21. Johnson (4-0) didn't win his fourth game last year until Aug. 15.
Twins 5, Devil Rays 3
MINNEAPOLIS -- Corey Koskie homered and drove in three runs, and Kenny Rogers pitched seven innings for Minnesota. Torii Hunter also homered for the Twins, who had scored just 20 runs in their last eight games, seven of them losses. Rogers (3-1) ran his career record in Minnesota to 7-3 with a 2.94 ERA.
Rangers 16, Blue Jays 11
TORONTO -- Juan Gonzalez and Carl Everett each homered twice to lead Texas. A crowd of 48,097, the largest since opening day, turned out at SkyDome after the Blue Jays offered $1 tickets in an effort to show Toronto remains vibrant despite SARS. Alex Rodriguez and Todd Greene also homered for the Rangers, who have won a franchise-record nine straight against the Blue Jays. Rodriguez is 9-for-11 with nine RBIs in his last two games. He reached base with a hit for the seventh straight time with his ninth homer of the season in the third inning. Gonzalez hit a two-run drive in the first off Mark Hendrickson (1-4), and his three-run shot off Jeff Tam in the sixth gave Texas a 12-4 lead. Everett, who knocked in four runs, also has nine homers. Carlos Delgado hit a two-run shot off John Thomson (2-2).
Athletics 3, White Sox 2
CHICAGO -- Chris Singleton had a pair of RBIs against his old team, and Barry Zito out-pitched Bartolo Colon. Singleton, who spent three seasons with the White Sox before being traded to Baltimore in January 2002, drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the seventh. The A's won their fifth straight. Eric Byrnes went 3-for-3 with an intentional walk, tying his career high for hits.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Braves 3, Astros 1
HOUSTON -- Greg Maddux pitched seven innings to win his third straight decision and Gary Sheffield hit a two-run single for Atlanta. The Braves have won 12 of 14 following a 4-8 start. Maddux (3-3) lost his first three starts for the first time in his career, at which point he had an 11.05 ERA. But he held Houston to just one run and five hits, outpitching Roy Oswalt (2-3). John Smoltz worked the ninth for his 26th save in as many tries dating to last season.
Cardinals 13, Mets 3
ST. LOUIS -- Matt Morris pitched six innings and Scott Rolen and Edgar Renteria each drove in four runs for St. Louis. Morris (2-2) gave up two runs and five hits. Eduardo Perez homered for the Cardinals. Mike Piazza had three hits, including an RBI double, for New York, which made two more errors. The Mets have lost three in a row. Rolen's two-run double highlighted a four-run first against Al Leiter (3-1), and he added a two-run single in a seven-run eighth.
Expos 3, Brewers 2
MILWAUKEE -- Brian Schneider hit a tie-breaking RBI infield single with one out in the ninth inning for Montreal. Brad Wilkerson homered and scored the go-ahead run and Montreal starter Javier Vazquez struck out 12 in seven innings as the Expos won for the fourth time in five games. With one out in the ninth, Wilkerson drew a walk from Mike DeJean (0-2), stole second and went to third on Keith Osik's errant throw into center field. Schneider then hit a one-hopper off second baseman Keith Ginter's glove to score Wilkerson. Wes Helms and Royce Clayton homered for the Brewers.

Brown (2-1) struck out seven, walked none and allowed five hits, including a home run by Mike Lieberthal.
Marlins 7, Diamondbacks 5
PHOENIX -- Mark Redman pitched seven shutout innings and Alex Gonzalez hit a three-run homer for Florida. Mike Lowell and Todd Hollandsworth added two-run shots for the Marlins, who snapped Arizona's first three-game winning streak of the season. Redman (3-2) gave Florida a big lift just hours after No. 1 starter A.J. Burnett had reconstructive elbow surgery. He is expected to miss 12-to-18 months.
Cubs 4, Giants 2
SAN FRANCISCO -- Moises Alou homered and drove in two runs, and Dusty Baker won in his first game back in San Francisco. Kerry Wood (4-1) struck out eight over six strong innings for the Cubs, who turned their new manager's emotional homecoming into a success. Baker spent the past 10 seasons with the Giants, winning 840 games and leading them to the World Series last fall before leaving in a dispute with owner Peter Magowan. Ray Durham hit a leadoff homer for the Giants, who have lost three straight for the first time this season. Still, at 18-7, San Francisco is off to its best start in 30 years.
