LISBON -- The Columbiana County Board of Elections office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday to accept applications from voters wanting to use absentee ballots in Tuesday's primary election. Voters can also apply for the ballots from 8:30 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. today, Thursday and Friday. The office is at 41 N. Park Ave., near the courthouse.
Burglary at restaurant
SALEM -- A burglary was reported at a downtown business, police said Tuesday. Someone entered Ezio's Italian Restaurant and Lounge, 182 S. Broadway Ave., sometime after 3 a.m. Sunday and stole about $195 in cash from two registers, police said.
Model Alexis to visitHickory High School
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Supermodel Kim Alexis will sign books and discuss how health and fitness positively affected her professional and personal life from 6-9 p.m. Saturday in the Hickory High School Auditorium. Having been featured on more than 500 magazine covers, she has guest-starred in numerous TV shows and written two books, "A Little Luck" and "A Model for a Better Future." The "Spring to Health 2003" event, sponsored by NuBridge Development Inc. and Sharon Regional Health System, has a $12 admission charge and is a benefit for local chapters of the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. Free health screenings will be provided. Dr. Maryann Payne, a Sharon Regional cardiothoracic surgeon, will discuss "Heart Health for Women-Taking Charge."
City council decertifiesland in Hermitage, Farrell
FARRELL, Pa. -- City council has agreed to decertify from the Keystone Opportunity Zone 9.4 acres along Ohio Street in Hermitage and the 3-acre site of Farrell City Hall, both of which can't be developed. The Hermitage land, which can't be built on because it is under a high-tension power line, was given to Farrell as part of the Sharon Steel bankruptcy settlement, said LaVon Saternow, Farrell city manager. The KOZ is a state and local tax-free zone for business, which is designed to induce new business development. Also on Monday, council appointed Jarrett Samuels to the Farrell Recreation Commission for the remainder of this year to fill the unexpired term of Linda Wheaton, who resigned.
Mother-daughter contestat Shenango Valley Mall
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Shenango Valley Mall and WHOT Hot 101 will host the mall's annual Mother Daughter Look Alike Contest on May 10. Participants in the contest will be judged how much they resemble each other and on having similar hobbies, talents and other items. Mothers and daughters who would like to participate may do so by visiting mall customer service before May 8 to register. Teams must register in advance and must appear in person the day of the contest to be judged. A woman's health exposition also will take place in the mall May 10. Vendors will be on hand throughout the day to discuss women's health and wellness. The exposition will be open during mall hours, 10 a.m.-9 p.m., May 10. For more information, call (724) 346-4564.
Attack, carjacking
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 39-year-old Youngstown man told police that three men attacked him and stole his van while he was stopped at a traffic light on Market Street early Tuesday. Police reports say the man, who is employed at the Ohio State Penitentiary, was on his way home from work about 2:30 a.m. when a man jumped in front of his van at a traffic light at Market and Hylda Avenue. When the driver exited his van to confront the man, the man and two others attacked the driver, the report says. The driver told police his attackers appeared to be intoxicated and that one of them drove the van away as he was trying to fend off the other two. The driver sustained cuts on his elbows and a bloody nose in the altercation.
Sentenced in stabbing
WARREN -- A 45-year-old Warren man who pleaded guilty in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to reckless homicide and possession of cocaine has been sentenced to two years in prison by Judge Andrew Logan. Kevin Jones Sr. of Milton Street could have received up to 10 years in prison for stabbing Johnny Barnes, 42, of Warren during an argument May 25 outside a home on Tod Avenue Southwest.
