Spray can preventfruit on apple trees
Q. Is there anything that can be sprayed on apple trees once they start to bud in the springtime to stop them from bearing fruit?
A. There's no good way to prevent all the fruit from forming, but you can prevent some by spraying the tree with a chemical thinner at a very high rate just after all the petals fall off the flowers, said Dave Ferree, a fruit-crop specialist at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster, Ohio.
He recommended naphthalene acetic acid at a concentration of 50 parts per million. If you have trouble finding it, contact companies that supply commercial growers.
The chemical thinner will cause some leaves to "flag," or twist and droop, Ferree said.
