Who makes the rules? It shouldn't be children

Who makes the rules? It shouldn't be children

This is in response to the writer who complained that her daughter's Band-Aid coverage of a prohibited school eyebrow piercing should be allowed by the school. The writer states that they cannot look for hidden areas which are pierced and which violate the school's written policy. If one were to pierce a navel, this would clearly be covered with the use of clothing. The Band-Aid on a face is a clear distraction. If the parent actually approves of her minor daughter's face piercing and allows jewelry at home, fine. It needs to be removed for school to comply with the policy.
This should have been stipulated to the child before any piercing was agreed upon. As I read the letter, it became obvious that the child is in charge here.
The demand for this piercing is far less important than the message that is being sent that just because a child is faddish that the school needs to accept this. One remedy would be to tell the daughter to wait until she is older to have this done, which is what most parents would do. Few, if any, parents I know would allow a minor child to do permanent disfiguration to their faces when they are simply too immature to make a decision affecting their entire life. When my son mentioned an earring, I simply told him that this would be fine when he was on his own.
Some parents will pay for their kids' tattoos. Sorry, we have a problem with this. It's also a fad and a minor child should never get the funds and support for a lifelong change to their body. The parents and the schools need to show some backbone and say no to these kids.
The list goes on and on with parents giving in because it's easy. The four-wheelers which inept parents buy and allow kids to use (illegally) are another area where the kids make the rules. The appropriate way to effect a change is to go through proper channels and try to change the rule or the law -- don't expect others to accept your own non-compliance just because it's what YOU want.
Working and cooperating within society is the only way to raise a child to prepare them to function in the real world.

Vandals should think about what they're doing and stop
EDITOR:
I am writing this letter in hopes that it will be published and that the ignorant culprits will read it. I have been participating in the Struthers Little League for the past seven years, watching my two oldest children grow up through this excellent organization and now with my two youngest children. Over the years I have seen the fields torn up, concession stand vandalized, equipment stolen, vending machines blown up, etc.. But nothing affected me as much as what I saw last evening, the charred remains of what used to be our only rest room facilities.
Someone apparently had the ignorant idea that burning down these portable toilets would be fun. How stupid was this person? Not only was this cruel, but it was also very dangerous! Thank God, the entire complex did not go up in flames.
My children, as well as the hundreds of other children who participate in the Struthers Little League, would of been devastated if they were told that they couldn't play baseball this year because some idiot burned down their fields. The Struthers baseball fields (Davis Ball Park) are one of the nicest and well kept facilities in our area, and we looked forward to every spring when the children would enjoy America's favorite past-time.
Please do not get me wrong, I do feel that the complex is an extremely safe environment (or else I would not bring my young children to the field). I feel that the vandals are children who, for whatever reason, are getting their kicks out of destroying someone else's property. I am however, pleading to whoever continues to vandalize our fields to please stop. I realize that the individuals who are doing this are probably juveniles and more than likely will never know that this article was written, but I just feel it necessary to voice my opinion on this situation.
