Honors college admission
LIBERTY -- Liberty High School senior Jennifer Shagrin has been admitted to the Ohio University Honors Tutorial College for next fall. The college, in Athens, admits 55 students per year. They study with faculty one-on-one or in small seminars. Shagrin plans to study journalism.

Hispanic awareness event
YOUNGSTOWN -- "Hispanics, the Largest Minority in the USA (Unveiling Their Diverse Contributions)" is the theme of the fifth annual Hispanic Awareness Celebration at East Middle School at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
School improvements
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Community School has made various improvements using government funding sources.
The funds will be used to help reduce class size, to provide in-services to keep teachers informed of the best teaching practices, to supply technology equipment and train staff in ways to incorporate technology in the classroom, to improve peer relationships, to expand the library and buy encyclopedias and to fund a speech and language therapist.
Sources include the Title I Schoolwide Project, Title II Improving Teacher Quality, Title II-D, Safe and Drug Free Schools, Innovative Programs and Special Education/Individuals with Disabilities Education Act funds.
Creative writings sought
WILMINGTON, Del. -- Word Dance magazine seeks creative writing pieces of youngsters or letters they have written to armed forces workers.
The nonprofit quarterly magazine features poetry and short stories written by children. To be considered for publication, pieces must be from children in grades kindergarten through eight and be accompanied by a Word Dance submission form.

Access program grant
WARREN -- The Mahoning Valley College Access Program has received a $2,500 Governor's Access Initiative Best Practices Grant from the Ohio College Access Network. The money will assist MVCAP in sharing its successful approaches with new and developing programs affiliated with the state network.
The nonprofit MVCAP, with locations in Youngstown and Warren, aims to increase the number of students in the Valley who continue their education beyond high school.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Great Expectations Learning Centers in Mahoning and Trumbull counties is registering children for its summer program, "Camp Ants In Your Pants." Child care is available for infants, toddlers, preschool and school-age children. COLLEGE HAPPENINGS
Senior artists' display
ALLIANCE -- The annual Senior Culminating Exhibit at Mount Union College features senior artists' works on display in the college's Crandall Art Gallery through May 11.
The gallery is in Cope Music Hall, Simpson Street and Union Avenue. Hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 1 to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.
