SOFTBALL Velk has no-hitter in J-M's 13th win of year
Canfield's Megan Turocy threw her eighth shutout.
NORTH JACKSON -- Jackson-Milton senior Corey Velk (13-4) threw a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and three walks as the Bluejays defeated Lowellville, 11-0, in an Inter-County League softball game Monday.
Shannon McGee tripled while Velk and Niki James doubled for Jackson-Milton (13-4, 7-3 ICL).
Western Reserve 17, McDonald 0
MCDONALD -- Quinn McCammon had two triples and three RBIs and starting pitcher Mikah Berger had two hits and two RBIs for the Blue Devils (17-2, 11-1 ICL). Berger also tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out five and walking one.
Springfield 7, Mathews 0
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Krista Snyder threw a three-hit shutout, striking out 12 and walking six for Springfield. Christie Warren went 3-for-3 with two doubles and Heather Snyder added two RBIs for the Tigers (7-7, 6-4 ICL).
Ursuline 10, Warren Harding 2
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ali Vitello had two hits and three stolen bases and Courtney Davidson added two hits, including a homer, and five RBIs for Ursuline (13-9, 5-1) in a Steel Valley Conference game.
Vanessa Dickson also had two hits, including a triple, for the Irish.
For Harding (8-6, 1-5), Nikki Makridis had two hits.
Boardman 8, Madison 2
BOARDMAN -- Jennifer Pancake (12-1) gave up just one run in five innings and hit two doubles, a single and drove in three runs.
Jenna Brandenstein had two singles and two RBIs while Ashley DiDomenico had a single and two RBIs for the Spartans (16-1).
Canfield 7, Struthers 0
STRUTHERS -- Winning pitcher Megan Turocy (12-2) struck out 16 batters in scattering four hits for her eighth shutout. Turocy had two hits and two RBIs.
Also for Canfield (16-4, 7-1 Metro Athletic Conference), Nikki Garrett and Elizabeth Brown each drove in two runs. Holly Hickenbottom had two of Struthers' hits.
Poland 16, Salem 0
SALEM -- Katie Naumoff and Ciera Urichich each had two hits for the Bulldogs (14-4, 6-1 MAC), who drew 17 walks and were hit three times.
Poland pitcher Mallory Conger (7-2) struck out 14 and did not walk a batter.
Hubbard 4, Liberty 0
HUBBARD -- Amanda Taylor threw a one-hitter and struck out five for the Eagles (10-6, 2-3 Trumbull Athletic Conference). Lynle Cornell had three hits for Hubbard.
Newton Falls 2, Brookfield 0
BROOKFIELD -- Lindsey McCartney (8-1) threw a one-hitter for the Tigers (13-5, 8-1 TAC). Casee Piquet doubled for the winners.
Southeast 2, Mogadore 0
RAVENNA -- In the last of the 11th inning, Tiffany Trammel drove in two runs. Trammel, Jen Whiteleather and Ashley Austin each doubled for the Pirates (7-9, 4-4).
