NOTEBOOK From Churchill Downs
New owners, big plans: The new owners of Domestic Dispute have plans for the colt that go beyond Saturday's Kentucky Derby. "If you're buying a horse like him, you want to buy him for the long run," said Chuck Winner, a California businessman who purchased Domestic Dispute last weekend with partner David Bienstock. Until Sunday, Bob Baffert was training the colt for owner Gary Garber. Paddy Gallagher will now train the colt, who galloped 11/2 miles Monday. The last-minute transaction was reminiscent of Prince Ahmed bin Salman buying War Emblem for Baffert to train after last year's Illinois Derby. War Emblem won the Kentucky Derby three weeks later.
Frustrated Baffert: Baffert has complained to Churchill Downs officials about on-track delays that have occurred the past two days during training hours. On Sunday, a horse was injured in the first turn, setting off a siren. The track was closed for about 20 minutes, postponing scheduled gallops by Baffert's Derby duo, Kafwain and Indian Express. On Monday, Kafwain worked on starting from a gate. But another horse got hurt and forced another 20-minute delay.
Quiet morning: Empire Maker and Peace Rules, trainer Bobby Frankel's powerful duo, walked around the barn area Monday. Both worked six furlongs Sunday.
