Director Chuck Nelson said the tournament has been beneficial.
HUBBARD -- The first night of the 16th KO Drugs High School Boxing tournament will feature 40 bouts Wednesday night at Hubbard High gymnasium.
Two fights in the upper-class division and 20 more in the underclass division will be contested.
The rules are the same: Competition is open to all boys and girls in grades 9 through 12. There are 15 weight classes and no one with pro or amateur experience is allowed to compete. There will be round-robin competition beginning Wednesday night and through four Wednesdays in May, culminating with a night of title bouts May 28.
Bouts consist of three 45-second rounds with contestants using 18-ounce gloves and extra padded headgear.
What meet is about
"Competition, courage, physical fitness and mutual respect between those who compete are what this tournament is about," said tournament founder and director Chuck Nelson.
"Some of the kids from this tournament over the years have gone on to become outstanding amateur boxers and even turned professional, but best of all we even have had young people given scholarships at colleges and universities that have the sport of boxing on their athletic agenda," added Nelson.
More than 120 boxers have signed up to fight this year. The doors will open every night at 6 p.m. with the first fights scheduled for 7 p.m.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. For more information call Chuck Nelson at (330) 702-1122.
Glad to have it back
Hubbard athletic director Paul Andraso is pleased to host the tournament.
"We are glad to have it back because it gives young people something to do athletically and keeps both participants and spectators off the streets," he said.
The tournament's proceeds will benefit the KO Drugs program and the Hubbard athletic department.
