YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested Lydia D. Mayfield, 31, of 625 W. LaClede Ave. on three warrants alleging cruelty to animals after neighbors complained of a bad odor coming from her house.
Police reports say officers had to enter the residence with face masks and compressed air because the odor was so bad.
Inside, they found two dogs that appeared to be starving, unidentified remains of several other animals, trash, clothing, feces, fleas, ticks and flies.
Neighbors told police Mayfield visited the house for only a few minutes each day.
She was not there when police arrived but showed up shortly after they left. They returned and arrested her.
Attack, carjacking
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 39-year-old Youngstown man told police that three men attacked him and stole his van while he was stopped at a traffic light on Market Street early Tuesday.
Police reports say the man, who is employed at the Ohio State Penitentiary, was on his way home from work about 2:30 a.m. when a man jumped in front of his van at a traffic light at Market and Hylda Avenue.
When the driver exited his van to confront the man, the man and two others attacked the driver, the reports say.
The driver told police his attackers appeared to be intoxicated and that one of them drove the van away as he was trying to fend off the other two. The driver sustained cuts on his elbows and a bloody nose in the altercation.
Sentenced in stabbing
WARREN -- A 45-year-old Warren man who pleaded guilty in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to reckless homicide and possession of cocaine has been sentenced to two years in prison by Judge Andrew Logan.
Kevin Jones Sr. of Milton Street could have received up to 10 years in prison for stabbing Johnny Barnes, 42, of Warren during an argument May 25 outside a home on Tod Avenue Southwest.
Burglary at restaurant
SALEM -- A burglary was reported at a downtown business, police said Tuesday. Someone entered Ezio's Italian Restaurant and Lounge, 182 S. Broadway Ave., sometime after 3 a.m. Sunday and stole about $195 in cash from two registers, police said.
Model to visit Hickory
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Supermodel Kim Alexis will sign books and discuss how health and fitness positively affected her professional and personal life from 6-9 p.m. Saturday in the Hickory High School Auditorium.
Having been featured on more than 500 magazine covers, she has guest-starred in numerous TV shows and written two books, "A Little Luck" and "A Model for a Better Future."
The "Spring to Health 2003" event, sponsored by NuBridge Development Inc. and Sharon Regional Health System, has a $12 admission charge and is a benefit for local chapters of the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. Free health screenings will be provided.
Mother-daughter contest
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Shenango Valley Mall and WHOT Hot 101 will host the mall's annual mother-daughter look-alike contest on May 10. Participants will be judged by how much they resemble each other and if they have similar hobbies, talents and other items.
Mothers and daughters who want to participate should visit mall customer service before May 8 to register. Teams must register in advance and must appear in person the day of the contest to be judged.
A woman's health exposition also will take place in the mall May 10 during mall hours, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. For more information, call (724) 346-4564.
Fashion, talent show set
NILES -- Our Lady of Mount Carmel pupils will have a fashion and talent show at 5:30 p.m. May 8 in the school gym to celebrate the end of the impending school year.
Eighth-grade pupils will perform the fashion portion of the program, while entertainment acts will be performed by pupils in fifth through seventh grades. Third- and fourth-graders also will give special performances.
Tickets are $4 for adults and $1.50 for pupils.
Panels seek residents
McDONALD -- The village is taking applications from residents to serve on the income tax appeals board and on the audit review committee. Letters of interest should be submitted to the mayor at the municipal building before May 31.
