PITTSBURGH -- Russell Stuvaints was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday to a free-agent contract.
Stuvaints, a three-year starter for the Penguins, played both defensive back and linebacker.
The McKeesport, Pa., native, was second on the team last fall in total tackles. He's projected to be a defensive back and special teams player with the Steelers. Stuvaints is 6-foot, 210 pounds.

CANFIELD -- Freshman Tiffany Patteson's solo home run in the bottom of the first inning was all the offense starter Kelly Murphy and reliever Steph Hartman needed, as Youngstown State (32-12-1, 12-3-1 Horizon League) defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay 1-0 and completed a series sweep Sunday at McCune Park.
YSU extended its winning streak to eight games, tying a school record.
Murphy (18-4) had a perfect game for 42/3 innings before surrendering a double to Amber Techlin.
The Phoenix (8-21, 4-8) threatened in the top of the fifth inning with runners on second and third and one out but Murphy pitched out of the jam.
Hartman picked up her seventh save with a scoreless seventh inning.
Patteson went 2-for-2 against UWGB starter Kristin Kosobucki, who surrendered only three hits.
YSU visits Ohio University Wednesday for a doubleheader.
Baseball
NILES -- Freshman Justin Thomas scattered seven hits and struck out a career-high 11 as Youngstown State defeated Butler 7-3 Sunday at Cafaro Field.
J.J. Newman drove in three runs as YSU (20-21, 8-8 Horizon) avoided a series sweep. The Penguins snapped a four-game losing streak.
All three runs allowed by Thomas were unearned. Kevin Libeg and Josh Wells finished on the mound in relief.
Butler is 24-22, 10-6.

Howland relaysets record
BELOIT -- Willie Davis, James Justice, Anthony Jefferson and Tony Davis of Howland High School set a meet record (43.3 seconds) in the 4x100-meter relay Saturday at the West Branch Warrior Invitational track and field meet.
The Tigers won the team title with 192 points. Salem was second with 108.
George Fetchko of the Tigers set a record in the discus with a throw of 174 feet, 5 inches. The old mark was 157-0.
Howland's Tony Davis was chosen MVP of the running events and teammate Brandon Alexander was picked field events' MVP.
Colts ink Floyd
INDIANAPOLIS -- Louisville cornerback Anthony Floyd, a graduate of Chaney High, signed a free-agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts Sunday.
Kern signs with Lions
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union College All-American Chris Kern signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions Sunday.
Kern started in the secondary the past three seasons as the Purple Raiders won three national championships.
Run/walk
WASHINGTONVILLE --The Habitat for Humanity will sponsor a 5K run/walk on June 7 in Washingtonville between Columbiana and Salem. Cost is $10 for early registration and $12 for day of the race.

Penn-Ohio golf
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- Scott Porter and Zach Mansky shared medalist honors as the Youngstown Ohio Carpet team extended its league lead in the Penn-Ohio Golf League here at Del Mar Golf Course.
Porter and Mansky each shot 1-under-par 71 and shared medalist honors with New Castle's Doug Seftas.
Ohio Carpet leads the standings with 65 points while Warren is second with 50, Sharon third with 47 and New Castle is fourth with 30.
Two other golfers shot even-par 72's. They were New Castle's Screech Morini and Sharon's Bob Blaze
