Spirit beats CyberRays 2-1 to move above .500 for first time ever
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Julie Fleeting scored and the San Diego Spirit used an own goal by the San Jose CyberRays in a 2-1 victory Sunday.
The victory pushed the Spirit (2-1) above .500 for the first time in franchise history.
San Diego was 0-5-4 in its previous nine matches when it had a chance to go above .500.
The CyberRays (1-2) took a 1-0 lead after Tisha Venturini-Hoch scored in the 49th minute.
But San Diego scored two goals seven minutes apart to take the lead.
Fleeting tied it on a crossing pass from Shannon MacMillan with a sliding kick that beat LaKeysia Beene in the 54th minute.
The Spirit got help on the go-ahead goal in the 61st minute when Kim Pickup's throw-in went into a crowd of players in front of San Jose's goal. Beene outjumped everyone, but the ball deflected off her hand into the goal.
