RAVENNA -- Officials with the Ohio Department of Transportation's District 4, which includes Mahoning and Trumbull counties, say the agency used more road salt during the past winter than in any previous winter.
More than 172,000 tons of salt was used by District 4, which also includes Stark, Summit, Portage and Ashtabula counties, and more than 1 million gallons of salt brine was also used to combat snow and ice.
District 4, which is responsible for nearly 5,000 road miles, spent more than $5 million on salt this past winter.
Trumbull County had 90 inches of snow this winter, and Mahoning had 75 inches. Ashtabula had the most snow of any county in the district with 140 inches.
Valley winnersin math competition
CLEVELAND -- Pupils from the Mahoning Valley won top prizes in every division of the Greater Cleveland Area 24 Math Game Championship in Gund Arena Monday.
The championship pits pupils against one another on math functions in the least amount of time.
From among 200 children competing, winners were Nakkita Brown, McGuffey Elementary School, Warren, fourth/fifth-grade division; April Barlow, West Elementary, Youngstown, sixth-grade division; Kristi Mraz, Hillman Middle School, Youngstown, seventh/eighth-grade division; and Joseph Myers, Volney Rodgers Junior High School, Youngstown, platinum master.
Stream Cleanup Day
POLAND -- Stream Cleanup Day will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Volunteers should meet in the College Street Parking lot of Poland Woods. Gloves, bags and light refreshments will be provided. The first 40 volunteers also will receive tree seedlings and T-shirts.
"Last year, we had Poland High School students, families from the community, retirees and Poland Forest Board members. It is astounding the amount of trash we removed," said Kim Mascarella of Mahoning River Consortium and Eastgate Regional Council of Governments.
The cleanup, sponsored by the Alliance for Watershed Action and Riparian Easements, the consortium and the village, is made possible through an Ohio Environmental Protection Agency grant.

Trustees special session
COITSVILLE -- The township trustees will meet in special session on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the township hall to appoint a replacement for Trustee Frank Sergi. Sergi resigned from the board April 16 citing health reasons.
3 arrested in slaying
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested two teenage boys and a woman in the weekend slaying of Dominique Lynch of Trussit Avenue.
Charges are pending against the 15- and 17-year-old boys and the woman, who were all taken into custody without incident about 1:15 p.m. Monday at a home in the 900 block of Parkwood Avenue.
Motorcyclist charged
GIRARD -- A 32-year-old motorcyclist faces charges after a high-speed chase Monday afternoon.
Michael A. Dibble, of Powers Avenue, was to appear today in municipal court on charges of reckless operation, fleeing and eluding and having an expired driver's license.
Police reported spotting a cycle speeding on North State Street at about 12:30 p.m. They reached 90 mph in pursuit into McKinley Heights, where Dibble was caught trying to hide, police said.
Drug charges filed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police have charged Elie Faraj, 18, of Shields Road with possession of crack cocaine and possession of marijuana after they spotted a plastic sandwich bag containing suspected marijuana on the passenger seat of the car Faraj had been driving.
Police reports say officers spotted a small green plastic bag containing suspected crack cocaine after moving the bag of suspected marijuana.
Police arrested Faraj about 8:50 p.m. Sunday in a parking lot at Westlake Terrace Homes on the city's North Side.
