Officer joins list of those killed
Hartzell is the youngest city police officer to die while working.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The memorial page of the Youngstown Fraternal Order of Police Web site lists the names of 11 city officers killed in the line of duty.
Soon it will be 12.
Patrol Officer Michael Hartzell, 26, was gunned down early today during a downtown traffic stop, police said. He is the first officer to die on duty since 1992 and the first to be slain in nearly 16 years.
He is also the youngest.
The last city officer killed was Detective Sgt. Millard Williams, the Web site says. He died April 14, 1992, just three weeks shy of his 50th birthday.
The 14-year YPD veteran was killed in his cruiser in a head-on collision on Oak Street near Hine Street. Both Williams and the other driver were pronounced dead at the scene and had to be cut from their cars, according to the site.
Gunned down
An officer was gunned down five years earlier on the North Side. On Sept. 22, 1987, Patrolman Paul Durkin, 34, stopped his cruiser to question a man carrying a car stereo and speakers on Goleta Avenue.
The man shot Durkin in the chest and lower abdomen through the open driver's side window of the cruiser.
William Dawson Jr. was convicted of the killing after his father told police his son was responsible. Dawson confessed, the Web site says. He had been arrested within 12 hours of the officer's death.
Durkin was not wearing his vest when he was killed, though he usually did wear one during his tour, the site says.
Others killed
Other officers killed on duty, according to the Web site and Vindicator files, are:
Patrol officer Ralph DeSalle Jr., 40, was killed June 13, 1984, by a tractor-trailer that jack-knifed as he directed traffic at an accident scene on I-680 near Wayne Avenue.
Patrol Officer Frank Cichon, 41, died Dec. 21, 1963, as he investigated a traffic crash and was struck by a passing driver who police said had consumed alcohol. The driver was charged with second-degree manslaughter, but a grand jury declined to indict and the charge was dropped. He was the father of three.
Patrol Officer Henry Clemens, 49, died Dec. 4, 1927, after being shot when he surprised three robbers stealing tires on East Front Street. There have been no arrests, the Web site says.
Detective Benjamin Yeadon died Feb. 27, 1925, after a September 1924 foot pursuit during which he scaled an East Boardman Street fence and his service revolver slipped from his holster, struck a rock, fired and shot him in the abdomen.
Patrol Officer George Leonard, 32, died March 29, 1924, during an investigation of a man with a gun at Klivan's Store downtown. Joseph Dee shot Leonard and was beaten unconscious for resisting arrest by Leonard's brother, William Leonard, also a patrol officer, the Web site says. The suspect later died, and William Leonard was cleared of wrongdoing.
Patrol Officer Alexander Warren, 38, died May 3, 1921, after being shot by two people he approached to question in an alley along Belmont Avenue between Rayen Avenue and Wood Street. No arrests were made.
Patrol Officer Samuel Banks, 41, died Oct. 4, 1919, when he was hit by a streetcar while delivering checks to fellow officers at a streetcar station known as the Sharon Line.
Patrol Officer Alfred Evans, 35, who died Nov. 5, 1911, was shot to death by a man he had questioned on West Front Street. The killer was never found.
Patrol Officer William Freed, 27, died May 15, 1891, after being shot by a burglary suspect who had shot and escaped from another officer who was transporting him to the station, the Web site says. A William Fitzgerald was tried and executed for the crime.

Across Mahoning County, another seven officers have lost their lives, the Web site shows. They are: John Costantino, 1920, Campbell Police Department; Joe Ruby, 1923, Campbell Police Department; John Harkins, 1952, Struthers Police Department; Raymond Darwich, 1952, Struthers Police Department; Albert Masi, 1973, Campbell Police Department; John "Sonny" Litch, 1981, Mahoning County Sheriff's Department; and Richard Becker, 1983, Poland Township Police Department.
