Makeup artist likes a clean canvas

NEW YORK (AP) -- Makeup looks its best when it's applied to a clean canvas, says Sonia Kashuk.
The No. 1 rule in the dos and don'ts section of her new book "Real Beauty" (Clarkson Potter) is: "Makeup should only go on a freshly washed and moisturized face."
Rule No. 2 is to apply cosmetics in bright, even light. "You have to see what you're doing," advises the makeup artist.
Other "don'ts" are:
UPink complexions shouldn't wear pinkish foundations.
UYou shouldn't wear dark lipliner and a lighter lipstick.
And the "dos":
UBlend, blend, blend! You don't want to see where a color begins or ends, whether it's foundation or eye shadow.
UTake direction from your hair, not your clothes or eye color, in choosing shades of cosmetics.
UShimmer eye shadows can be worn by women of any age.
