LISBON Council OKs larger fountain for downtown

LISBON -- Village council has approved buying a $4,500 fountain for village square.
Officials had planned to spend only $1,700 for a fountain, which was to be put in as part of the village's downtown revitalization project. However, officials decided that instead of a 7-foot-high fountain with a 44-inch radius they'd buy a 12-foot fountain with a 51-inch radius. They gave no reason for their change. Installation of the fixture began Monday.
Water meters
In other matters at its meeting Monday, council heard a representative of Neptune Equipment Co. of Canton describe its water meters, which include a radio transmitter that broadcasts meter readings. Council is considering purchasing a new meter system for the village, because its present meters are no longer manufactured and can't be replaced if they break.
The village has about 1,400 water meters and it takes two months for readers to visit each home and read them.
With the Neptune meters, a reader using a hand-held device could read all the meters in a neighborhood from one spot, and many could be read by a laptop computer in city hall. This would make it possible to read all the meters in one day and make possible billing for water every month, instead of every two months.
If council approves, the village would buy 500 of the new meters, plus the hand-held unit, the laptop computer and related software for about $90,500. Additional meters could be purchased as funds become available.
Council took no action on the matter.
