kAt the time, he lived in Austintown.
kHe was a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School and attended Youngstown State University and the police academy at Mahoning Training Consortium.
kHe was certified as an emergency medical technician and served as an auxiliary officer in Austintown for six months in 2000, before being hired by YPD. He also worked for the Lowellville Police Department.
kHartzell is the first Youngstown officer killed in the line of duty since April 1992. The 1992 death was a result of an accident.
kHartzell is the first city officer gunned down since 1987.
