BOOKS Publications make sew-sew gifts ideas for Mothers Day
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS
Sewing-related books make fine gifts for Mother's Day. Both of these are comprehensive references, nice for experienced home-sewers, but especially helpful for beginners:
"The Ultimate Sewing Book," by Maggi McCormick Gordon (Collins & amp; Brown, $24.95), is a new teaching guide to dressmaking and home furnishing projects.
The first chapter, Getting Started, gives information about fabrics and equipment. Then, beginning with the basics, the book looks at the component parts of a garment or home accessory. The construction process is explained, and each project is a chance to practice certain techniques. The final chapter looks at care and repair, including mending, stain removal and fabric care.
The book is fully illustrated and packed with information. It's brand new, so ask for it at bookstores or call the distributor, Sterling Publishing, at (212) 532-7160.
Pattern for quilting
Quilting enthusiasts will enjoy Volume 3 of "Quilt-Lovers Favorites," compiled by Better Homes and Gardens ($34.95). It's a new collection of 15 quilts from the pages of American Patchwork & amp; Quilting magazine, offering full-size patterns and step-by-step instructions.
Each quilt is accompanied by project ideas, using adaptations of the original, to create practical items. Optional size charts help you alter dimensions quickly.
You'll find a variety of quilt designs, from vintage to classic to artful applique. About 10 pages are devoted to quilting basics -- getting started, rotary cutting, piecing, making sleeves for hanging and binding the edges.
This book is spiral bound for easy reference. To order, call (800) 491-0647, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays. It should also be in bookstores and quilting shops soon.
