Football team makescommunity visits
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State University football program will be taking part in various community services throughout the spring during their off-days of practice.
Today, the Penguins will be at the Hear Teach Ministries and on Thursday will take part in activities at the Leonard Kirtz School.
Next Monday, the Penguins will be at the Rescue Mission, back at Heart Reach Ministries on Wednesday, while another group will go to the Boys Club.
They also have visits scheduled for the Fairhaven School and Tod's Children's Hospital.
At least five or six players along with one of the coaches will take part in the activities.
Baseball teambeats Davis & amp; Elkins
NILES -- Kendall Schlabach and Brandon Calpen each had three hits and two RBIs, while Justin Thomas scattered five hits as Youngstown State posted a 9-3 victory over Davis & amp; Elkins Tuesday at Cafaro Field.
YSU collected 13 hits, including Ty Furino's first home run of the season, and outscored the Senators 7-1 in the final four innings.
Thomas worked six and 2/3 innings. Freshman Kevin Libeg allowed only one hit and struck out five for the Penguins in two and 1/3 innings.
With the score tied 2-2, the Penguins, with two out, scored four in the sixth inning on four hits.
Furino, with the bases loaded, walked and Jim Phillips scored. After a pitching change, Schlabach hit a single and Charles Schultz and Matt Speas scored. Calpen then singled home Furino.
The Penguins will host Bethany College at Cafaro Field today at 4 p.m.
Smart honored
INDIANAPOLIS -- Senior right-hander Jon Smart has been named the Horizon League's Pitcher of Week for the period ending March 23.
Smart hurled a complete game in the Penguins' 3-1 win over Akron. He allowed one unearned run, while limiting the Zips to three hits in seven innings and he struck out five and made two putouts.

Frank Bubba gameset Friday in Warren
WARREN -- Sebring's Brian Clark and Newton Falls' Roy Sembach will be the basketball coaches for Friday's Second Annual Frank Bubba Memorial All-Star Game at Warren Harding.
A girls game will tip off at 6:30 p.m., followed by a boys game.

Fitch to hosttrack meet Saturday
AUSTINTOWN -- Athletes representing 12 schools will compete in the Early Bird track and field meet Saturday at Fitch High School's stadium.
Field events will start at 10 a.m. and running events at 10:30.
Brookfield, Chaney, Fitch, Poland, Howland, Niles, Canton McKinley, Cleveland East Shaw, Akron North, Akron Kenmore, North Canton Hoover and Fitch are entered.
Kempe, Frum competein Early Bird meet
ATHENS -- Justin Kempe, a senior at Ohio University and an Austintown native, competed in the 3000-meter steeple chase and took first in the Early Bird Invitational track and field meet at Ohio University by running 9 minutes, 9.2 seconds.
He also won the same event at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., in 9:23.9.
Drew Frum, a sophomore for the Bobcats and a Poland native, finished fourth in the 1500 (4:00.2).

Jurevicius' son dies
TAMPA, Fla. -- The infant son of Tampa Bay receiver Joe Jurevicius has died nearly 10 weeks after being born prematurely during the Buccaneers' run to the Super Bowl.
Michael William Jurevicius, born on Jan. 14, died Monday night at a hospital in St. Louis.
The receiver's wife, Meagan, gave birth to the couple's first child five days before the NFC championship game. Jurevicius missed three days of practice following the baby's birth, then flew to Philadelphia to help the Bucs defeat the Eagles 27-10.
