Overflowing with underwear

A local congressman says he will provide the names of servicemen and women.

WARREN -- War may be hell, but it doesn't have to chafe.
Since this past weekend, Jeannette Sanders has collected enough underwear, socks and toiletries for American fighting men and woman to fill 30 shipping boxes.
Media coverage, as well as a visit by the Valley's two congressmen, has sparked an avalanche of donations, calls and e-mail messages.
"People are unbelievable," said Sanders, the mother of two Marines stationed in Iraq and Kuwait.
Donations have filled one room in Sanders' Butler Road N.E. home, and are flowing into drop-off stations at Packard Music Hall and the Holiday Inn in Boardman.
There also has been an overwhelming response from volunteers to help pack the donations into boxes, probably this weekend, she said.
Getting names
With such a great response, Sanders' said, her next concern is getting names and addresses of soldiers to send them to.
Packages must be mailed to an individual, who could then share, she said.
After a few days in the field, everyone needs toothpaste, socks, deodorant and fresh skivvies, she said. On the battlefield, socks and underwear are disposable, and soldiers were instructed to only pack a few sets, Sanders said.
"Those guys don't have a lot of hygiene," she said.
Sanders is asking for tube socks -- white is fine -- and briefs in various sizes.
In the heat and the sand, her sons prefer boxers, she said, but the Marine Corps says differently.
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, said he would provide Sanders with a list of local servicemen and women to whom she can ship donations.
