Suburban Pittsburgh woman gives birth to sextuplets at UPMC

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A woman gave birth to sextuplets Wednesday and the three girls and three boys were in critical but stable condition, a doctor said.
The children were delivered by Caesarean section to Erin Perry, 33, at Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center shortly after 4 p.m., the hospital said.
"Mrs. Perry and the babies are doing quite well, given the circumstances," said Dr. Cynthia Sims, a maternal fetal medicine specialist who delivered the six babies by Caesarean section, in a release from the hospital.
"The babies are in critical, but stable, condition," Dr. Charles Bender, medical director of Magee's neonatal intensive care unit, said in the release. "We will continue to watch them very intensively from hour to hour."
Family details
Perry and her husband Joseph Perry, 33, live in suburban Pittsburgh and already have a 3-year-old son, Parker. A woman who answered the phone at the family's home said there would be no comment until a news conference scheduled for sometime today at the hospital.
Perry carried the sextuplets for a little more than 28 weeks. A full-term pregnancy is 40 weeks.
