NORTH JACKSON -- George A. Saadey, 44, of Gibson Road, Canfield, died after crashing his motorcycle at 8 p.m. Sunday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. Saadey, traveling north on Lipkey Road, lost control and was ejected as his motorcycle overturned and went off the right side of the road and hit a tree, the patrol said. He was not wearing a helmet, authorities said.
Arrested in gas theft
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ray J. Maggianetti wasn't the victim of a hit-skip driver but the suspect in a gas theft who crashed Sunday afternoon when pursued by an employee of Marathon gas station on Youngstown-Poland Road, police said. Maggianetti, 25, of Orlo Lane, Boardman, is accused of pumping $24 worth of gas at Marathon at 5:30 p.m. Sunday and leaving without paying for it. Police said both Maggianetti and the gas station employee lost control of their vehicles at Irma Street and South Heights. The gas station worker then crashed into the rear of Maggianetti's car and both cars then hit a parked car in the 1900 block of South Heights, police said. Maggianetti later flagged down police, telling them someone hit his car then fled, but the officer pieced together the events and arrested the Boardman man.
Watershed planning
CANFIELD -- The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's newest guidelines for watershed planning will be the subject of a presentation by Mark Bergman of the Ohio EPA's Twinsburg office at 1 p.m. March 26 in McMahon Hall at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm. Bergman will speak at a meeting of the Alliance for Watershed Action and Riparian Easements, whose aim is to improve environmental quality by enhancing local watersheds.
Arson indictmentsfor 2 New Castle men
PITTSBURGH -- Two New Castle men have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of arson and conspiracy related to a 2002 fire that destroyed a New Castle bar. According to the indictment, Samuel T. Durst, 24, of Lincoln Ave., and John D. Marmo, 37, of Francis Street, conspired between March and May of 2002 to set fire to the bar known as Johnny Dogs at 805 Croton Ave. The indictment describes Marmo and his wife as the owners of the bar. The indictment states that during March and April of 2002, Marmo solicited a person to burn Johnny Dogs. Durst is charged with setting the fire that destroyed the bar May 8. Assistant U.S. Atty. Shaun E. Sweeney said the law provides a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000 for Durst and a maximum sentence of five years and a fine of up to $250,000 for Marmo.
Ex-teller pleads guilty
PITTSBURGH -- A Sharon woman could face up to a 30-year prison sentence, $1 million fine or both for misapplication of funds by a bank employee. U.S. District Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan said Jennifer Marie Turuck, also known as Jennifer Gregory, 26, of Thornton Street, pleaded guilty to the charge and faces sentencing June 13. Authorities said Turuck worked as a teller for First National Bank of Pennsylvania during 2001, and on about 50 occasions between Feb. 26 and Dec. 11 took money from her teller drawer for her own use. Turuck falsified her daily and weekly cash balancing records to conceal the takings. Loss to the bank totaled $25,600.
Failure to appear
YOUNGSTOWN -- Darlene L. Shina, 23, of Howard Street was arrested Sunday evening on Belmont Avenue for failing to appear in municipal court last month for trial on charges of child endangering and animal cruelty. Shina was arrested last June 25, after police said they found deplorable living conditions for her two children and a bulldog without food or water. The house was red-tagged by city housing inspectors, who considered it uninhabitable. Records show her case had been reset six times.
Rottweilers kill toddlerin Clarion County
LUCINDA, Pa. (AP) -- A 2-year-old girl was killed by two Rottweilers when they escaped her uncle's kennel Sunday. Lillie Krajewski, of Buffalo, N.Y., was visiting her grandmother in Clarion County when the dogs broke free about 12:30 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clarion coroner. Her grandmother tried unsuccessfully to stop the attack, police said. The dogs were taken to a humane society while officials decide what to do with them.
