SPRING TRAINING Tribe knuckles under to Wakefield; Twins beat Pirates in ninth

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Tim Wakefield's stellar spring continued Monday as the Red Sox knuckleballer allowed two runs in five innings and struck out four as Boston beat the Cleveland Indians, 9-4.
Nomar Garciaparra and Manny Ramirez homered on consecutive pitches in the fourth inning, and Lou Collier added a bases-loaded triple for the Red Sox.
Ramirez' 1-for-2 day dropped his preseason average to .576. He also made a diving catch in left field to end the second with a runner on second.
Cleveland's Travis Haffner, battling Ben Broussard for the starting job at first base, had a home run and a triple.
Broussard has missed four straight games with an injury to a muscle in his rib cage.
Cleveland starter Jason Bere gave up nine hits and five runs in his first loss of the spring.
Twins 5, Pirates 4
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Shane Andrews' two-run homer in the ninth, the first runs off Pirates reliever Duaner Sanchez this spring, rallied Minnesota.
The Pirates opened a 3-0 lead in the first on Rob Mackowiak's two-run homer and Brian Giles' sacrifice fly off Joe Mays.
The Twins were held hitless by Jeff D'Amico until Doug Mientkiewicz doubled ahead of run-scoring singles by Denny Hocking and Mays in the fifth, cutting Pittsburgh's lead to 3-2.
The Pirates took a 4-2 lead on Jason Kendall's first homer of the spring, a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the fifth off Mays. Kendall, coming off consecutive off seasons, went 3-for-3 to raise his spring average to .442.
Minnesota got a run back in the eighth against Tavarez on pinch-hitter Todd Sears' run-scoring single before Andrews' third homer won it in the ninth.
Sanchez, in the running for one of Pirates' bullpen openings, gave up two runs and two hits in one-third of an inning. He previously pitched 41/3 scoreless innings over five games.
Micheal Nakamura struck out the side in the eighth for the victory.
