Capitals 2, Avalanche 1
WASHINGTON -- Sergei Berezin had a goal and an assist in the first period to lead Washington. Sergei Gonchar scored the other goal for the Capitals, which moved within a point of Tampa Bay in the Southeast Division. Joe Sakic scored for Colorado, which lost consecutive road games for the first time this season. The Avalanche remained four points behind Vancouver in the Northwest Division. Berezin has scored in his first two games with the Capitals since being acquired from Chicago at the trade deadline.
Red Wings 6, Senators 2
DETROIT -- Brett Hull's 32nd career hat trick lifted Detroit into first place in the Western Conference. The Red Wings won for the 15th time in their last 17 games. Detroit, with 96 points, moved past the Dallas Stars and within two points of the Senators for first place overall in the NHL. The Senators lost their second straight game. Curtis Joseph stopped 41 shots for the Red Wings, who only had 20 shots on goal. But Hull, who also had an assist, put in three, and Henrik Zetterberg and Brendan Shanahan each had a goal and an assist. Nicklas Lidstrom got the other goal. Marian Hossa and Mike Fisher scored for Ottawa.
Flames 2, Mighty Ducks 2
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Petr Sykora scored twice late in the third period, including the tying goal with 31 seconds remaining for Anaheim. Calgary scored twice on power plays in the second period and appeared headed for the victory until Sykora's late goals. Sykora beat Jamie McLennan with 4:05 remaining, then tied it with goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere pulled for an extra attacker. Earlier, McLennan made a glove save to stop Paul Kariya on a penalty shot.
