MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State scored six runs in the seventh inning to defeat Youngstown State's baseball team 13-8 Thursday evening.
The Eagles scored five unearned runs. Roy Gentry went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Morehead, while the YSU offensive attack was led by Justin Banks, who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
* JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Youngstown State women's golf team placed fourth out of eight teams in the North/South Tournament at the Jacksonville Beach Course.
Jacksonville shot 312-314--626 to win it, trailed by Bethune Cookman (631), Butler (661) and YSU (331-331--662).
Jennifer Grossi led YSU with a 162 (83-79) while Gina Abruzzino shot 165 and Nichole Hamstreet turned in a 170.
* ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Youngstown State softball team extended its winning streak to four games with a two wins in the Rebel Games Wednesday.
The Penguins (5-1) beat Bucknell 4-2 and Penn 10-4. The 5-1 mark ties the 1996 school record for the best start of a season.
Freshman Kelly Murphy (3-0) threw her second straight complete game in the opener while against Penn, Liz Holt tied a school record with four hits.
Howlandscholarships
WARREN -- Three Howland High students -- Anthony Prvonozac, Ryan Alan Rappach and Matt Zakrajsek -- are the recipients of the 2003 AMI Howland Wrestling scholarships.
Prvonozac earned four letters and took eighth in the state. He will attend Youngstown State.
Rappach earned three letters and placed fifth in the sectional. He will attend YSU.
Zakrajsek took sixth in the district and won three letters. He's going to Thiel.
McKavich makesfirst team
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Missy McKavich, a senior basketball player at Slippery Rock University, earned first-team all-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division honors.
She led the league 20.7 points a game and placed 10th with a 77.9 free throw shooting percentage.
Bowling entries
YOUNGSTOWN -- Entries for the Youngstown Women's Bowling Association's 61st city tournament and fourth annual 9-pin no-tap tournament will be accepted until April 1.
The city tournament's four-woman team event will be staged at Bell-Wick Bowl while the singles and doubles will be at Amron Lanes. Entry fee is $16 for each event. The city meet runs May 10-18.
The no-tap tournament for three-woman teams runs May 9-17 at Bell-Wick. Entry is $15 per bowler.
Also, March 14 is the closing date for entries for the YWBA's 11th annual senior tournament on March 23 at A-Plus Family Bowl.
Austintown nativechampionship coach
MANASSES CO., Va. -- Mark Smaltz, a former wrestler at Austintown Fitch High School from 1981-84, won the Division A state championship in his first season as coach at Brentsville High School.
Brentsville had 11 wrestlers qualify for state and five of them advanced to the finals.
Smaltz was a three-year letterman at Fitch. He is the son of Donald and Janice Smaltz of Youngstown.

EAST PALESTINE -- East Palestine High basketball player Abbey Gorby received honorable mention for the Division III All-Northeast Ohio Inland team. Her name was incorrectly listed in last Friday's editions.

Artest suspended
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Pacers forward Ron Artest was suspended for one game without pay for exceeding the maximum flagrant-foul penalty points.
The NBA has now suspended him for nine games this season, and the Pacers have suspended him once. He loses about $21,000 in salary every time he's forced to sit out.
Artest drew his latest suspension for tackling Eric Snow in the Pacers' loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday night. The suspension was automatic because a flagrant foul was called.
Five in quarterfinals
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Brian Vahaly, Andy Roddick, Robby Ginepri, James Blake and Vincent Spadea won third-round matches in the Pacific Life Open to put five U.S. players into the quarterfinals.
Vahaly, who climbed from No. 403 in the world in 2001 to No. 97 last year, defeated Tommy Robredo 6-2, 7-5 in their match early in the day. Vahaly barely made it into the event as a qualifier.
The sixth-seeded Roddick, 21, advanced with a 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-6 (1) victory over No. 11 Sebastien Grosjean in their night match.
In the women's draw, top-seeded Kim Clijsters took just 51 minutes to beat Chanda Rubin 6-2, 6-3 and advance to the semifinals against Conchita Martinez, who defeated Amanda Coetzer 6-2, 6-1.
Legislation passesthrough committee
WASHINGTON -- The Senate Commerce Committee approved legislation that would create a federal agency to oversee professional boxing.
Committee chairman John McCain, R-Ariz., sponsor of the legislation, said it would restore integrity to the sport.
His bill would establish a United States Boxing Administration within the Labor Department. It would license professional boxers, promoters, managers and sanctioning organizations.
