AWARDS Mahoning DAR chapter honors essay winners

YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met March 11 at Shepherd of the Valley with Joanne Collier, regent, presiding.
Sarah Morcos and Christopher Hanna, students at Holy Family School in Poland, were honored as the winners of the chapter's American History Essay Contest sponsored by the national society.
The essay topic was "A Letter from Valley Forge: Winter 1777-1778." Each entrant was to pretend to be a Revolutionary War soldier writing a letter home to family describing their activities and conditions at Valley Forge.
The topic was chosen in commemoration of the 225th anniversary of the Continental Army's winter encampment there.
Miss Morcos' essay also won for the Northeast Ohio District for seventh grade and is vying with other district winners at the state level. Hanna competed in the eighth-grade division.
Presentations
Both students read their essays to the chapter membership, and each received a bronze medal and certificate presented to them by Phyllis Garwig, vice regent and chairman of the essay committee. The students' mothers and their teacher were guests.
Guest speaker was Judge Theresa Dellick on the subject, "Juvenile Delinquency -- Where Does It Begin?"
Blanche Hillman read the president general's message, and the national defense report was given by Isabel Wymer.
