Liberty drops out of transit system

LIBERTY -- Township trustees have agreed to drop out of the proposed countywide mass transit system.
Township administrator Patrick J. Ungaro said trustees made the move Monday to withdraw for now from the Niles-Trumbull Transit Service and be reimbursed $13,500 it has paid.
Trustees earlier agreed to pay the $1-per-resident fee to be in the service area, which is to include Niles, which is leading the pilot project, Cortland, Howland, McDonald, Vienna and Weathersfield.
Total cost of the project is estimated at $620,000, including $226,000 from Trumbull County commissioners and the seven local communities. Niles is waiting for a ruling from the Federal Transportation Authority on an objection raised about the bidding procedure used by Niles to determine who will manage the system. Ungaro said the bidding question is holding up the project. When it's resolved, the township will consider rejoining.
