Teen awaits sentencein fatal accident
LISBON -- A Lisbon woman faces sentencing for aggravated vehicular homicide in the June 30 traffic accident death of a 12-year-old boy.
A Columbiana County Common Pleas Court jury found Amanda Monigold, 18, of Cusick Road, guilty Tuesday.
Monigold's trial started Monday before Judge David Tobin. No sentencing hearing date has been set.
The third-degree felony bears a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Authorities said Monigold was driving fast and purposely swerving the Chevrolet Blazer she was driving on McCormick Run Road in Madison Township when she wrecked the vehicle.
The crash killed her passenger, Trevor Smith, also of Cusick Road.
Monigold had been a foster child of Trevor's mother, Dianna Smith.
Monigold had continued living with the family after she turned 18, explained assistant county Prosecutor John Gamble, who handled the case.
Two arrested
SALEM -- Authorities announced Tuesday that two Salem residents, Darren T. Lindsey, 36, and Hallie J. House, 32, were arrested Monday. Lindsey is charged with receiving stolen property, and House is charged with possession of cocaine. They both gave 448 Franklin Ave. as their address.
According to the Columbiana County Drug Task Force, which made the arrests along with Salem police and agents of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification, 1.4 and 1.575 ounces of cocaine were seized along with a handgun, money and drug paraphernalia. The task force could not be reached for additional information including where the arrest took place.
Costs from lawsuit
SALEM -- City Law Director C. Brooke Zellers told city council Tuesday he will investigate whether the city can recover any of the legal costs stemming from a successful defense of a lawsuit filed by a city worker. Fire Department Lt. Jimmie Smith had filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court alleging city officials tried to force him out after he was diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder. The lawsuit recently was dismissed. Zellers is to talk to the law firm of Roetzel and Andress in Akron, which was hired by the city's insurance company to handle the defense.
Trapped in wreck
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A man lay inside his wrecked sport utility vehicle for 30 hours before he pulled himself out Tuesday and walked to a nearby home for help. Pennsylvania State Police said William McConahy, 32, of RD 6, New Castle, was taken to UPMC Health Center, Pittsburgh, where he was in fair condition this morning. Police said McConahy was driving west on U.S. Route 422 in Slippery Rock Township near Rose Point Road about 4:30 p.m. Monday when his car went off the left side of the road, through a fence and over a hillside. Police said the SUV landed on its roof. Police said McConahy freed himself about 10 p.m. Tuesday. The crash remains under investigation.
Life of union organizer
SHARON, Pa. -- Penn State Shenango will present Margaret Orner in "Portrayal of Mary 'Mother' Jones" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Forker Lab Forum. The event is being held in recognition of Women's History Month and is free and open to the public. Mary Harris Jones (1830-1930) was born in Cork, Ireland, a descendant of Irish freedom fighters, and emigrated to Canada and then to the United States. She was committed to helping working-class men and their families and spoke out on issues of child labor and the exploitation of the working-class man. She also was involved in union organizing that resulted in her arrest and imprisonment. Margaret Orner, who is from the Philadelphia area, researched and wrote a one-woman play about Jones' life.
Cause of fire
MERCER, Pa. -- A faulty furnace is being examined as the possible cause of a fire that destroyed the mobile home of the James Burk family at 493 Hartwick Road, Findley Township. Bill Finley Jr., Mercer East End fire chief, said Tuesday that no one was home at the time of the fire, which was called in by a neighbor about 11 p.m. Monday. The blaze started in the furnace, he said.
