SALEM -- Columbiana County commissioners noted that a section of Depot Road will be closed for about two months this spring. The closing is in connection with a project planned by the Ohio Department of Transportation to widen and make other improvements at Depot Road's intersection with the state Route 45 bypass in Perry Township, just south of Salem. While Depot Road is closed, traffic will be detoured onto Snyder Road. No further details on the project were available.
Jazz legend comingto Hickory High
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Selected Mercer County high school students will get a chance to perform with musical great Maynard Ferguson and his band next week. "An Evening with Maynard Ferguson" is being presented at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hickory High School. The appearance is sponsored by Marks Music. Stephen Garay, Hickory band director, said 30 students from local high schools have been picked to perform with Ferguson on one song, the theme from Rocky, during the performance. Tickets are $15 and are available at Marks Music, 50 N. Buhl Farm Drive.
Murder case evidence
WARREN -- Attorneys representing a woman accused of killing her husband are trying to prohibit prosecutors from using letters she wrote to a co-defendant as evidence against her. Donna Roberts' attorneys argued that point during a hearing Wednesday before Judge John Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court, who'll rule later. Roberts, 57, of Howland, and Nathaniel Jackson, 30, of South Pearl Street, Youngstown, were charged with killing Robert Fingerhut in his Fonderlac Drive S.E. residence Dec. 11, 2001. Jackson was convicted and sentenced to death. Fingerhut operated the Greyhound bus terminals in Warren and Youngstown.

HERMITAGE, Pa. -- City Commissioner Joseph Augustine of Basil Drive is seeking re-election on the Republican ticket. Augustine is a 10-year veteran of the board and is a board member of the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities and the executive committee of the Northwest Pennsylvania Regional Planning & amp; Development Commission. He also serves on several National League of Cities committees.
Arc foundation director
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Arc of Mercer County Foundation has named Sharpsville native Karen Gray as its new foundation/development director. Gray will be responsible for fund-raising in support of Mercer County Association for the Retarded Inc. She will also direct activities to increase awareness of MCAR and its programs. MCAR provides services to individuals with mental retardation, but funding may not be available for all of the services needed, said John Holliday, president of the Arc of Mercer board. That's where the foundation can make a difference, he said, noting that Gray brings experience and skills necessary to run the organization. Gray attended Pennsylvania State University and the University of South Africa. She lived in Washington, D.C., and Boston, working in marketing and sales before returning to the Shenango Valley. She now lives in Sharpsville and replaces Ann Coleman as director.
Assault, robbery probe
SHARON, Pa. -- Police are investigating the assault and robbery of a Sandy Lake man in the 500 block of George Street around 6:30 a.m. today. Kenneth Fleet, 35, told police he had spent the night at a woman's home in the area and decided to walk to a convenience store early this morning to get something to eat. He said he was attacked by a man who punched and choked him and took his wallet, which contained $300. He described the attacker as a large black man wearing a brown bandanna over his face. Fleet was treated at Sharon Regional Health System for minor facial injuries, police said.
