MERCER COUNTY Program helps seniors buy market produce
Residents at least 60 years old and living on fixed incomes may be eligible.
SHARON, Pa. -- Mercer County Area Agency on Aging and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture are again offering the Farmers Market Nutrition Program for older adults in Mercer County.
The program provides eligible people with $20 worth of checks ($40 for couples) to buy fresh fruit and produce grown or growable in Pennsylvania from farm markets registered with the agriculture department.
To be eligible, a person must be at least 60, live in Mercer County, and not reside in a personal-care or nursing home.
Single people have a maximum income eligibility of $16,613 and a married couple's income must be less than $22,422 a year.
The checks may be used at two dozen farmers' markets and individual vendors around the county.
Those seeking the checks must bring proof of age and residence. The checks must be spent by Oct. 31.
