HUBBARD Car crash injures 4 during police chase

The Hubbard officer was trying to blow out the tires of the car being chased.
HUBBARD -- A Hubbard Township police officer and three men in a car being chased were injured in a near head-on collision Thursday night.
Patrol Officer William J. Greene, who was in a marked patrol car, was released after treatment at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
The driver of the car, David Pope, 45, of Ayers Street, Youngstown, was taken to Sharon Regional Health System. The hospital has not released any information on his condition.
His passengers, Jesus Febres III, 28, of Willis Avenue, Youngstown, and Bill Patierson, 52, of McKinley Heights, went to St. Elizabeth Health System and Northside Medical Center, respectively.
Patierson was released after treatment, and no one was available at St. Elizabeth's to provide information about Febres.
No one was seriously hurt, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Reason for chase
Authorities said police were pursuing Pope's car in the theft of an air conditioner from Kmart in Hermitage Town Plaza in Hermitage, Pa., at about 7:45 p.m.
Hermitage police broadcast a description of the blue Cavalier, and a Sharon police officer spotted it traveling west on U.S. Route 62.
The officer chased the car, but Pope wouldn't stop, Sharon police said.
His car rammed a Sharon police car at 62 and Budd Street then continued west into Ohio, Sharon police said, noting that the officer in that cruiser wasn't hurt.
Brookfield Township officers joined the chase at the Ohio line and it continued west on 62 to Chestnut Ridge Road.
Sharon police said the car turned onto Chestnut Ridge and collided with the Hubbard Township cruiser coming from the other direction to join the pursuit.
Officer's plan
Hubbard Detective Mike Begeot said Greene was going to put out spike strips to blow out the tires of the fleeing car, but the Pope car rammed the cruiser before he could.
Sharon police said they are charging Pope with aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding and recklessly endangering another person for ramming the cruiser.
Other charges are pending.
