Yanks strengthen weak spots in deal with Tribe

New York got outfielder Karim Garcia and pitcher Dan Miceli from Cleveland.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- In one trade, the New York Yankees bolstered two weak spots: their bench and bullpen.
New York acquired outfielder Karim Garcia and pitcher Dan Miceli from the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday for a player to be named or future cash considerations.
Garcia will give the Yankees a quality left-handed hitting platoon player while Miceli will solidify New York's middle relief, which has been shaky all season.
Garcia, who was just activated from the 15-day disabled list because of a wrist injury, was with the Yankees last season after being released by the Indians before spring training.
"I have mixed feelings because I was there last year and I didn't play too much," a teary-eyed Garcia said at Jacobs Field after being told of the deal. "Unfortunately, I know they [the Yankees] have a lot of outfielders there, too."
Started in Columbus
Garcia began the 2002 season with Triple-A Columbus before the Yankees brought him up in June. He played in just two games for New York before he was designated for assignment on July 3 after the Yankees acquired Raul Mondesi from Toronto.
The Indians re-signed him to a minor league contract on July 13, and after playing in 23 games at Buffalo, he came back to Cleveland and had a torrid final 51 games.
Garcia batted .299 with 16 homers and a major league-high 52 RBIs from Aug. 6 to the end of the season.
Injured wrist
The Indians had hoped he could continue that pace this season, but he injured his wrist during spring training and has struggled. Cleveland didn't want to send down promising young outfielders Jody Gerut and Coco Crisp just to have Garcia around.
The 27-year-old was batting .194 with five homers and 14 RBIs in 24 games. He sprained his wrist early in the season, but continued playing before going on the DL May 8.
Miceli was signed by the Indians on May 15 after being released by the Colorado Rockies. In 13 games with the Indians, the right-hander went 1-1 with a 1.20 ERA.
