SHARON, Pa. -- The new home for the Sharon City School District's Alternative Education Program (AEP) won't be ready for occupancy when school starts in September.
The school board voted Wednesday to reject all but the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning bids for improvements to the building, at East State Street and Forker Boulevard, adjacent to the high school.
Dr. Donna DeBonis, superintendent, said the bids came in higher than budgeted and the school board has decided to ask the state Department of Education for permission to have district staff do more of the building renovation work to reduce the project cost.
Bids were opened June 11 and came in at just under $300,000. The heating, ventilating and air-conditioning bid was $52,715 from D & amp;G Mechanical Inc. of West Middlesex.
DeBonis said the district can hold that bid for 45 days while it reassesses the project's scope.
Bids rejected
The general construction, plumbing, electrical and parking lot bids were rejected, she added.
The delay means the building won't be ready for pupils when school starts this fall. The school is for children with behavioral and other problems.
DeBonis said the program will continue at F.H. Buhl Club on East State Street at least for the first few months of the school term.
The building may not be ready for occupancy until after the Christmas break, she said.
Sharon bought the building in September from National City Bank for $200,000. In addition to the AEP program, the building will be used for maintenance storage.
In other business, the board named Athletic Director John Vannoy as a part-time assistant principal at Sharon High School for 10 months.
His salary is part of the administrative salary package being negotiated, DeBonis said. Vannoy served in the same capacity last year.
