EVENT Junior Civic League awards scholarships
Special projects and an annual ball fund the scholarship program.
LIBERTY -- The Junior Civic League held its annual scholarship luncheon June 8 at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex. The theme for the event was "A Look at Our Past and a Glance at Our Future."
Toastmistress was Phyllis Cross, and the prayer was given by Ruby Jones. Also taking part in the program were Amber Williams, Rudene Galloway, Geri Woods, Molly Seals, Wendy Webb and Doris Bullock.
Scholarships of $1,500 each were awarded to five high-school seniors who were selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, need, extracurricular activities and community involvement.
Cherie Howard presented this year's scholarships to the following:
UJonnelle Ballard, daughter of Darlene Ballard and a student at Chaney High School. She plans to study nursing at Kent State University.
UTerria Brown, granddaughter of Kenneth and Rosetta Brown, also is a student at Chaney High School. She was first runner-up at last year's Cinderella Ball and plans to attend Ohio State University to study nursing and eventually obtain a medical degree.
UMarquita Jones, daughter of Robin Woods, attends Wilson High School. She will pursue a degree in nursing at Youngstown State University.
UStephanie Wilson, a student at The Rayen School, is a daughter of Tabatha Spillman. She hopes to study industrial engineering and/or business at OSU and was recognized by the YWCA as a Young Woman with a Bright Future.
URichlynn Young is a student at Wilson High School. A daughter of Mary Young, she plans to attend YSU and hopes to become a veterinarian.
History
The league has awarded over $350,000 in scholarships to black students since its inception in 1952. The scholarship program is supported by the proceeds from the annual Cinderella Ball and from special projects.
