Red Sox 11, Tigers 2
BOSTON -- Nomar Garciaparra homered to cap a nine-run outburst in the eighth inning. Garciaparra connected for a three-run shot, a day after going 5-for-5. The shortstop is batting .427 in June. Jason Varitek also homered, doubled and singled, threw out two baserunners and tagged out the potential tying run at the plate in the sixth. Mike Maroth (2-12) picked up his major league-leading 12th loss and remains on track to become baseball's first 20-game loser since 1980. The Tigers have lost five in a row and 17 of their last 19.
Yankees 8, Devil Rays 5
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Hideki Matsui drove in three runs and Andy Pettitte pitched into the eighth inning. The Devil Rays outhit New York 10-7, but hurt themselves by issuing a team-record 12 walks. Pettitte (8-6) allowed four runs on 10 hits in 71/3 innings, improving to 10-1 in his career against the Devil Rays. Tampa Bay has lost seven of its last eight and is 4-18 in June.
Orioles 9, Blue Jays 2
TORONTO -- Melvin Mora homered, doubled and singled in his return to the Baltimore lineup and Sidney Ponson pitched another complete game. Mora had not played since being hit in the right hand by a pitch last Friday. After missing four games, Mora came back to go 3-for-5, raising his AL-leading average to .366, and scored three times. Ponson (10-4) pitched his third complete game of the season and 21st of his career. He gave up 10 hits, walked none and struck out four.
Rangers 9, Athletics 8
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rafael Palmeiro homered twice and Michael Young hit a tie-breaking single in the eighth inning. Young's two-out single off Jim Mecir (1-1) brought home Donnie Sadler, who had tripled before pinch-hitter Michael Lamb was hit by a pitch, to make it 7-6. Hank Blalock then had a two-run single. The Rangers trailed 6-2 before Palmeiro, who had hit just two homers his previous 23 games, homered in the sixth and seventh innings. Alex Rodriguez also homered for the Rangers.
Twins 6, White Sox 5, 11 innings
MINNEAPOLIS -- Jacque Jones hit a solo homer off Billy Koch in the 11th inning. Jose Valentin hit a three-run homer for the White Sox, who blew a 5-1 lead.
Angels 6, Mariners 3
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- David Eckstein went 4-for-4 with a homer and double, driving in three runs to lead Anaheim. Shawn Wooten homered and doubled for the Angels, helping Ramon Ortiz win his fifth straight start.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Brewers 12, Cubs 6, 10 innings
CHICAGO -- Brooks Kieschnick led off the 10th inning with a pinch-hit homer and Geoff Jenkins added a three-run home run. Cubs reliever Todd Wellemeyer (1-1) gave up all six runs -- five earned -- in the 10th.
Cardinals 9, Reds 6
ST. LOUIS -- Bo Hart, Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen homered in the first inning. The Cardinals connected early against Paul Wilson (5-5). Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 476th career homer, passing Stan Musial and Willie Stargell for 21st place. Griffey's three-run shot in the Reds first was his first homer in 92 at-bats, and his eighth of the year overall. Matt Morris (8-5) won for the first time in four starts despite his continuing struggles. He lasted six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits.
Diamondbacks 3, Astros 2
PHOENIX -- Lyle Overbay homered and Elmer Dessens earned his first victory since May 25 as Arizona won its eighth in a row. Dessens (5-4) allowed two runs on six hits, three of them infield singles, in 62/3 innings to snap a string of five consecutive no decisions. He struck out four and walked two.
Phillies 8, Braves 1
ATLANTA -- Vicente Padilla pitched four-hit ball over seven innings for his third win over Atlanta this season. Mike Lieberthal drove in three runs for the Phillies, who jumped ahead of Greg Maddux just two pitches into the game after Jimmy Rollins hit an RBI triple. Maddux (6-7) lasted only five innings, giving up seven hits and six runs -- four earned -- to surpass his loss total for all of last season.
Mets 6, Marlins 3
NEW YORK -- Rookie Jose Reyes drove in three runs, and Steve Trachsel pitched seven innings and had a sacrifice fly as New York ended its four-game losing streak. Trachsel (6-5) allowed three runs and eight hits while striking out five. Mike Lowell hit a two-out, two-run homer in the first inning off Trachsel to give the Marlins the early lead. Lowell's major league-leading 24th homer -- 100th all-time -- matched his career-best, set last season in 597 at-bats.
Dodgers 6, Giants 0
SAN FRANCISCO -- Hideo Nomo (9-6) allowed two hits over seven innings, and Adrian Beltre hit a three-run homer. Mike Kinkade also homered, and Ron Coomer and Cesar Izturis had run-scoring singles as the Dodgers got 16 hits and won for just the second time in their last 10 games at Pacific Bell Park.
Padres 7, Rockies 6
SAN DIEGO -- Rookie Miguel Ojeda hit his first big league homer and drove in four runs, and Donaldo Mendez hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly. In the seventh inning San Diego had three straight one-out singles off reliever Todd Jones (1-4), including Ojeda's single up the middle to bring in Sean Burroughs with the tying run. Mendez then hit a fly ball to the warning track in left to score Xavier Nady with the go-ahead run.
