WARREN -- A local attorney has been issued a subpoena to appear at a federal grand jury next month.
John Fowler was handed the subpoena Friday by an agent from the Youngstown office of the FBI.
"They want business records that I allegedly have that deal with another local attorney," Fowler said. He declined to identify the attorney or specify the type of records requested.
"I am supposed to go July 15, but I was told that the day may be changed," Fowler said.
Atty. John Large of Warren said an FBI agent stopped at his office Friday and asked for him to call.
"I was at court and then left to go out of town," Large said, when reached by cellular telephone. "I don't know what he wanted, but I called him back and told him to call me Monday."
Investigator issued subpoena
Kathryn Koch, a private investigator from Columbus, said she was served a subpoena by two local agents, Wallace Sines and Rachel Kolvek, earlier this week.
The subpoena is asking for business records that deal with work she did for two local attorneys. She declined to identify them.
"I primarily do criminal type work," Koch said. "When a lawyer calls, they ask me to research the facts of a case and interview witnesses, and sometimes they ask me to do background checks."
She declined to say what attorneys she does work for locally. She is also scheduled to appear before the grand jury July 15.
John Kane, agent in charge of the Youngstown office, declined to comment.
Requesting attorney records
Last week federal agents served subpoenas to current and former employees of Atty. Maridee Costanzo.
Costanzo has said she does not know what the agents are looking for and declined to comment further.
Nate Critchfield, Costanzo's former administrative assistant, said he received a subpoena shortly after being stopped for a traffic violation. Critchfield was stopped by a Warren city detective who has been on a special assignment with a state and federal task force for the past year.
Critchfield was charged with driving under suspension and failing to signal before a left turn. He is scheduled to appear in municipal court July 18.
Critchfield has said he also received a federal subpoena for some of Costanzo's office records. He declined to say what the subpoena is seeking but has noted that he has until July 15 to produce the material.
