OLYMPIC HOCKEY The entire '80 team will enter the 'Hall'

The U.S. team that won the gold medal will go into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
EVELETH, Minn. (AP) -- Twenty-three years later, the "Miracle on Ice" team is going into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
The entire 1980 squad, which earned a shocking victory over the Soviet Union in Lake Placid, N.Y., en route to winning the gold medal, will be inducted along with four players, the Hall of Fame announced Tuesday.
The Olympic coaching staff, general manager, team physician, trainer, equipment manager, chairman of the U.S. Olympic Hockey Committee and all 20 players will be enshrined at a ceremony on Oct. 18.
Pat LaFontaine. Mark Howe, John Cunniff and Dick Dougherty will also be inducted.
Upended Soviets
The underdog Americans, coached by Herb Brooks, upset the Soviets when Mike Eruzione scored midway through the third period of the semifinal game to give Team USA a 4-3 victory. The Americans won the gold medal by defeating Finland 4-2.
LaFontaine was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto earlier this month. He played 15 years in the NHL and ranks third among American players in goals (468) and sixth in assists (1,013). LaFontaine, a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic team, played eight seasons with the New York Islanders and six with the Buffalo Sabres before ending his career with the New York Rangers.
Howe played 22 seasons in the NHL -- 10 with the Philadelphia Flyers. He is the Flyers' leader among defensemen in goals (138), assists (342) and points (480).
Honored posthumously
Cunniff, who died last year, was on the 1967 U.S. national team and the 1968 Olympic team that competed in Grenoble, France. He spent 13 seasons in the New Jersey organization -- two as the Devils' head coach -- and was honored posthumously last year with the USA Hockey Distinguished Achievement Award.
Dougherty, 10th on the University of Minnesota's career scoring list with 187 points and fifth with 109 goals, was a member of the silver-medal winning 1956 U.S. Olympic team. He completed his career in the USHL.
