LEETONIA Project means.water shut-off

LEETONIA -- About 30 water customers on the south side of the village were to be without water for six hours today while workers replaced a fire hydrant and a main waterline shutoff valve.
Village Administrator Gary Phillips said the hydrant is on Anglemyer Street and the waterline valve is at Stoy and Spruce streets. He said the work would not cause delays or detours in traffic.
He said all residents on the south side could experience discolored water as a result of the work on the main water line. He said water becomes discolored when the minerals that build up in the pipes over time break loose because of the work being done on the pipes. The minerals are stirred up when the water is shut off for a time and then turned back on, he said.
Phillips said the problem of discolored water is similar to the occurrence with wells that have a high iron content. He said the village treats the lines with chemicals to seal the minerals to the pipes and also filters out as much of the minerals as possible.
The village crews will also be flushing fire hydrants throughout the village in the next few weeks.
