SALEM District raises tuition for nursing school

SALEM -- The city school board agreed to a $600 yearly tuition increase for students attending the Hannah E. Mullins School of Nursing.
The panel adopted the increase at its Monday meeting after the nursing school, which operates under the auspices of the city school district, requested it do so. Mullins teaches adults to be licensed practical nurses.
Mullins officials said the increase is needed to offset increased costs in wages and health insurance benefits for staff, as well as a decrease in funding for the nursing school from the Ohio Department of Education. The school also needs to buy equipment.
The tuition boost will bring total tuition for the school to $6,100 annually.
In matters unrelated to the nursing school, district officials are considering reducing the number of band directors from three to two.
"We're not sure we need three," Superintendent Dr. David Brobeck said.
The three full-time teaching positions serve grades five through 12.
Some critics of reducing the number of band directors spoke at the school board meeting.
They said two band directors wouldn't be able to adequately serve the school district's music teaching and supervision needs.
Brobeck said a decision on the matter probably will be made later this summer.
