NOTEBOOK From PNC Park

Indians moves: The Indians purchased the contract of right-hander Jose Santiago from Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday to bolster a bullpen depleted by consecutive 15-inning games. The Indians also optioned left-hander Brian Tallet to Buffalo and moved outfielder Ellis Burks from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. Burks was to have season-ending right elbow surgery today. Santiago was 0-1 with a 3.94 ERA in 15 games with Cleveland earlier this season. With Buffalo, he was 2-0 with two saves and an 0.90 ERA in 13 relief appearances. Tallet was 0-1 with a 3.77 ERA in four games, two starts, with the Indians. He started the Indians' 5-4, 15-inning loss to the Pirates on Friday night.
Simon on disabled list: Pirates first baseman Randall Simon learned late Saturday he had torn ligaments in his right hand while hitting his game-winning homer in the 15th inning Friday. The injury forced Simon onto the 15-day disabled list. The Pirates recalled Carlos Rivera from Triple-A Nashville to replace him. Rivera was hitting .263 with nine homers and 31 RBIs at Nashville.
Suspension: A suspension is almost certain in the wake of Jason Boyd bumping plate umpire Dana DeMuth after being ejected in the seventh inning of Saturday night's game. But was it a bump or was it a mirage? "I didn't think I bumped him," Boyd said. "I looked at the tape." According to Boyd, the umpire initiated the confrontation. "He just started looking at me," the pitcher said. "Then he threw his hands up. I was trying to figure out why. I could hear him mumbling something, but I didn't know what it was. When I asked him, he told me not to come over there. I started to walk over, and he threw me out. I've never had a confrontation with any umpire before."
Tavarez drops appeal: Pirates reliever Julian Tavarez began serving his three-day suspension Sunday for his role in the bench-clearing brawl June 14 against Tampa Bay. Tavarez initially said Friday he wouldn't appeal, then changed his mind after consulting with his agent and the players union. After Tavarez pitched 61/3 hitless innings Friday and Saturday against the Indians, Tavarez wouldn't have pitched Sunday and possibly not tonight even if he hadn't served the suspension. He threw 93 pitches Friday and Saturday, 75 during his five-inning outing Saturday. Catcher Jason Kendall's three-game suspension is on hold as he awaits an appeal hearing.
