Blue Jackets
COLUMBUS -- The Blue Jackets took steps to improve their goal scoring by choosing four forwards among the seven players they selected in the final day of NHL Draft.
The Blue Jackets started the day with four picks but made two trades. Columbus acquired fifth and sixth round picks from Carolina in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2004 Entry Draft and got a ninth round pick from Los Angeles for a ninth round pick in 2004.
With their first fourth-round pick, 103rd overall, the Jackets took forward Kevin Jarman from the Stouffville Spirit of the Ontario Provincial Junior A League. The pick was obtained from Pittsburgh in the trade that sent Jamie Pushor to the Penguins.
Jarman, who is heading to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst next season, scored 46 goals and had 36 assists in 46 games last season.
Dupuis next
One pick later, the Blue Jackets acquired Phillippe Dupuis, who spent last season with the Hull Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He had 22 goals and 34 assists in 68 games.
In the fifth round, 138th overall, Columbus selected Arsi Piispanen, a right wing from Jokerit of Finland. The 6-foot-3-inch, 163-pound forward recorded eight goals and 17 points last season.
The Jackets picked defenseman Marc Methot of the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights in the sixth round, 168th overall, and Russian defender Alexander Gusjkov in the seventh round, 200th overall.
In the eighth round, Columbus selected forward Mathieu Gravel, who spent last season with the Shawinigan Cataractes of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Gravel scored 24 goals and 26 assists in 72 games last season.
Columbus concluded its fourth draft by selecting defenseman Trevor Hendrikx of the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League. Hendrikx scored one goal and added eight assists in 56 games.
