DeBartolo auctionraises over $39,500
BOARDMAN -- Over $39,500 was raised for the Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Scholarship Foundation at the annual dinner and sports auction Sunday at the Holiday Inn.
The highest item successfully bid at $9,000 for an autographed Cal Ripken jersey. Other items included a Jim Brown autographed Cleveland Browns helmet, which went for $5,000, and a one of a kind jacket celebrating the San Francisco 49ers by combining image transfers, resins, metals and memorabilia. Cindy Zordich, wife of former Philadelphia Eagles defensive back, Mike Zordich, created this piece, which sold for $2,500.
"This is a wonderful community and I am so grateful for the support in helping our local high school seniors receive a higher education," said Marie DeBartolo York. "I know my father would be so pleased with the outstanding generosity of so many people from his home and I'm so proud to be from the Mahoning Valley. & quot;
Among the celebrities who took part, and were introduced by John York, who himself is involved with the youth of Youngstown and the surrounding communities, included Kevan Barlow, 49ers running back; Randy Cross, former 49er and current CBS sports analyst; Foge Fazio, former Cleveland Browns assistant coach, and Natalie Gulbis of the LPGA Tour.
The Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Scholarship Foundation awarded $30,000 in scholarships in May, bringing the Foundation's total to over $200,000 in the past five years.
Cuevas just missesqualifying time
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Boardman High graduate Monica Cuevas just missed qualifying for the finals in the 800-meter run at the Junior National Championships.
Competing Sunday at Stanford University, Cuevas ran 2 minutes, 13.35 seconds in the semifinals, her third-best time of the season. She needed to run 2:10.73 or better to advance.
Cuevas, who will attend Columbia University, ran in the meet for the second straight year. She finished in 2:17.33 in 2002.
Miller competesin tournament
SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. -- Dennis Miller of Niles, director of golf at Mill Creek Golf Course, shot a final round 74 to finish 15 strokes behind winner Tim Thelen in the PGA Golf Club Professionals Championships Sunday.
Miller opened with rounds of 74-72 and was within six shots of the lead before shooting a third round 77.

Utah man arrestedin Fiesta Bowl scam
SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah man charged with bilking dozens of Fiesta Bowl fans with bogus ticket sales on the Internet was arrested after being stopped for speeding and is due in court today.
Mark S. Beaver, 48, of Salt Lake City, was arrested Saturday morning in Sandy, Utah, a suburb about 20 miles south of the capital city, a spokesman for the state attorney general said. Authorities have been looking for Beaver since January, when he was charged with three second-degree felony counts of communications fraud.
Tyson released
NEW YORK -- Mike Tyson was released from a Brooklyn police precinct Saturday afternoon, hours after his arrest on assault charges following a brawl with two men outside a hotel.
Tyson, who turns 37 on Tuesday, was arrested at 5:30 a.m. after a fight with two Pennsylvania men outside a hotel, police said. All three were guests at the hotel.
Devers winsninth title
STANFORD, Calif. -- Gail Devers pulled out a win, Maurice Greene pulled out of a race and Allyson Felix pulled off a remarkable feat for a teenager as the U.S. track and field championships.
Devers, leaning at the finish line to edge Miesha McKelvy-Jones by one-hundredth of a second, won her ninth national title in the 100-meter hurdles.
Greene's hopes for a sprint sweep at the world championships ended when he pulled himself out of the final of the 200 after an unimpressive semifinal race that left him limping.
Felix, who graduated from high school Friday, placed third in the women's 200 to make the U.S. team for the world championships.
Storm wins titlein Arena League
TAMPA, Fla. -- Reserve quarterback Pat O'Hara threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third as the Tampa Bay Storm won its record fifth Arena Football League title with a 43-29 victory Sunday over the Arizona Rattlers in the ArenaBowl.
